Description
Kenji Kondou emerges as a first-generation Fafner pilot on Tatsumiya Island, originally assigned to the Mark Acht. His early persona is carefree and flirtatious, openly prioritizing socializing with girls over schoolwork. He regularly challenges Kazuki Makabe to sparring sessions, consistently losing yet revealing a competitive but good-natured spirit. His worldview shatters when Festum attacks force the island into shelters, unveiling Tatsumiya's true purpose. Witnessing the destruction and discovering classmates like Karin Kuramae and Shouko Hazama were pilots deeply affects him.

Selected for Fafner training with friends, Kenji engages in early battles against the Festum. He observes Shouko Hazama's sacrificial use of the Fenrir program, a stark reminder of the pilots' harsh reality. As conflict intensifies, his character matures from a lighthearted student into greater responsibility. By *Exodus*, he transitions from active piloting to a medical officer role within Alvis, demonstrating his commitment to protection. His duties include overseeing pilot health checkups, administering treatments like painkillers for assimilation symptoms, and coordinating with colleagues such as Maya Tōmi. His concern manifests when insisting pilots receive medical examinations before disciplinary actions and reminding Kazuki of appointments.

His relationship with Sakura Kaname evolves profoundly. Starting as comrades, they eventually marry, with Sakura adopting the surname Kondou. He exhibits fierce protectiveness towards her, especially after she returns to pilot duty post-injury recovery. In one instance, he extracts her promise not to die, underscoring his personal investment in the war. Their interactions reflect mutual reliance, with Sakura assuring him past tragedies were not his fault.

In *Heaven and Earth*, Kenji assists daily operations, helping the grieving Tamotsu Kodate and supporting festival preparations. He participates in veteran-led training for newer pilots like Hiroto Douma and the Nishino siblings, highlighting his mentorship. During combat, he pilots his Fafner to reinforce allies, notably aiding Kazuki against an evolved Eurus-type Festum.

*The Beyond* depicts Kenji operating the Siegfried System during the Fifth Operation Azure. While monitoring the battle, he watches a video of his wife and son, emphasizing his familial motivations. When Festum assimilation breaches the system, his eyes turn red from infection. To counter this, he jams multiple Activion tubes into his neck—a desperate act causing severe physical trauma, including bleeding from his eyes, nose, and mouth. This sacrifice successfully cancels assimilation for most connected personnel but fails to save Rina Nishio, whom he directly orders to halt her self-destructive actions.

His development balances frontline combat, medical duties, and personal relationships, consistently prioritizing the survival of his community and loved ones.
