Description
Hiei serves as a Kongou II-class fast battleship within the Fog Fleet's First Oriental Fleet, acting as Kongou's second-in-command and the fleet's de facto leader in Kongou's absence. Her ship-body displaces 37,187 tons, measures 222 meters long with a 31-meter beam and a 9.7-meter draft, and achieves a top speed of 80 knots. Armaments include 30 torpedo tubes, 118 photon cannons, 27 missile launchers, a high-voltage discharger, a beam-curving Super-Graviton Cannon, Wave-Force Armor, and the Mirror-Ring system (anime exclusive).
Her Mental Model takes the form of a late-teen girl with amber eyes and reddish-brown hair styled like a cobra's hood, wearing red-framed glasses. She dresses in a red student uniform with a white shirt, bow tie, and a "class representative" armband on her left sleeve, reflecting her role organizing her cruiser squadron as a student council. Hiei maintains a polite, respectful, and dutiful personality, though her demeanor can seem mechanical. She demonstrates significant devotion to Kongou, insisting on accompanying the hunt for I-401 despite orders to remain as acting flagship, instead delegating that duty to Ise.
Hiei collaborates closely with the Myoukou-class cruisers (Myoukou, Nachi, Haguro, Ashigara), who serve as her student council members. During the I-401 pursuit, she commanded the middle defensive line with Myoukou and light cruisers. She identified I-401's decoy strategy and deduced Kongou was the true target. Later, she clashed violently with Hyuuga, acting as a diversion for Gunzou Chihaya. Their fierce exchange left Hyuuga losing her Mental Model and a turret, while Hiei's Mental Model was destroyed and her Union Core entered autistic mode for self-diagnostics; both cores were later recovered by Yukikaze.
Her ship-body features a dark-pink hull in the manga. Notably, her design lacks radar antennae on the superstructure, referencing the historical sinking of her WWII namesake before such upgrades. The student council motif alludes to the real ship's past role as a training vessel.
