Description
Motoharu Tsuchimikado lives next door to Kamijou Touma and attends the same high school, forming one-third of the trio dubbed the Three Idiots. He deliberately cultivates an image with dyed blonde hair, ever-present sunglasses, a gold chain, and a green Hawaiian shirt worn over shorts or his school uniform, aiming to attract girls but often being mistaken for a delinquent. His muscular physique contrasts with his relaxed school demeanor.
Originally an Onmyouji Professor specializing in Feng Shui for the Anglican Church's Necessarius, he spent significant time in London and speaks fluent Japanese and English. He later infiltrated Academy City as a Necessarius spy, undergoing the Power Curriculum Program to become an esper. This resulted in a Level 0 ability called "Auto-Rebirth," which forms a membrane over torn blood vessels and repairs bodily damage, especially when using magic. As a magician-esper hybrid, employing magic inflicts severe internal injuries due to the conflicting powers, though Auto-Rebirth mitigates the damage. His magical expertise in Onmyoudou and Feng Shui enables techniques like barrier creation and invoking the four guardian deities (Genbu, Byakko, Seiryu, Suzaku).
Tsuchimikado operates as a multi-faceted spy, supplying intelligence to Academy City (via Aleister Crowley), Necessarius, and the covert GROUP. Academy City discovered his infiltration within 36 hours, forcing him to juggle loyalties to survive assassination attempts from both science and magic factions. He adopts the magic name "Backstabbing Soul" (背信の悪魔, Haishin no Akuma), reflecting his self-admitted identity as a habitual liar and trickster willing to betray anyone to achieve his goals. Despite this, he works to maintain the balance between science and magic, accepting blame when his failures escalate conflicts.
He fabricated a family within Academy City, bringing Maika Tsuchimikado from an orphanage to pose as his sister. Initially tactical, he grew genuinely protective upon recognizing her inherent kindness. Maika became his moral anchor, the sole person he refuses to betray. His intense devotion to her safety earned him the nickname "Siscon Sergeant," and he exhibits jealousy when she refers to others as "Onii-chan." Protecting Maika's peaceful world is his primary motivation for continuing high school life and undertaking dangerous missions.
In combat, he relies on firearms proficiency and his self-developed lethal martial arts style, "Deadly Thrust Killing Slash," incorporating techniques from various disciplines. During the Angel Fall incident, he partnered with Kanzaki Kaori to investigate, revealing his magical background to Touma and aiding in neutralizing the ritual. He later joined GROUP specifically to access resources ensuring Maika's protection. His actions include manipulating Touma into missions, eliminating threats like Hino Jinsaku with pragmatism, and coordinating behind-the-scenes efforts during conflicts such as Academy City's invasion.
Chronologically, he appeared peripherally in early arcs before becoming prominent during Angel Fall. Subsequent involvements include working with GROUP during the invasion of Academy City and participating in operations tied to Aleister Crowley's plans. His character development shows a shift from detached pragmatism to deeper emotional investment, particularly through his bond with Maika, though he maintains his deceptive spy persona.
