Description
Tōma Kamijō resides in Academy City as a high school student, officially designated Level 0 due to his undetectable and unclassifiable ability. His right hand wields Imagine Breaker, negating all supernatural phenomena—magic, psychic powers, and divine blessings—while also canceling his own luck, plunging him into relentless misfortune he vocalizes as "How unlucky!" He credits this curse for heightening his awareness of others' suffering, driving him to aid them.

Born outside Academy City to Kamijō Touya and Kamijō Shiina, his childhood was shadowed by superstition as locals blamed misfortunes on him, labeling him "god of pestilence." After a bankrupt man’s attempted stabbing drew media scrutiny, his father enrolled him in Academy City—a decision later revealed as orchestrated by founder Aleister Crowley to study Imagine Breaker. Early classmates avoided him due to his bad luck, but current peers appreciate how his misfortune absorbs their collective ill fortune.

Tōma’s identity centers on an uncompromising drive to help others, regardless of risk. He declares, "I don’t need a reason to save someone," frequently intervening impulsively and suffering grave injuries. This persists even after losing pre-Index memories, though he masks his amnesia with social caution. He assists former enemies who value life but shows no mercy to those like Sherry Cromwell or Vento of the Front who harm innocents.

Imagine Breaker’s origin defies categorization—neither esper power nor magic—with hints of a divine nature. God’s Right Seat members speculate it contains greater power. Severing his arm unleashes an invisible, dragon-like force feared by entities like Fiamma of the Right. Post-severance, his arm regenerates with Imagine Breaker intact.

Protecting Index from a magical spell obliterates his memories, a secret known only to his doctor Heaven Canceller, Mikoto Misaka, and Shokuhou Misaki. Later, Shokuhou Misaki saves him from Deadlock by blocking his pain with Mental Out, accidentally damaging memory pathways tied to her. This causes anterograde amnesia specific to Misaki, erasing new memories of her moments after they form.

During *The Miracle of Endymion*, Tōma encounters singer Arisa Meigo, a Level 0 targeted by magicians who fear her power could ignite science-magic warfare. He shields her and confronts Shutaura Sequenzia on the Endymion space elevator. Using Imagine Breaker on Shutaura restores her memories, exposing Arisa as a manifestation of Shutaura’s wish to save lives during the Orion spaceplane incident. This halts Endymion’s collapse and resolves the conflict.

Tōma’s appearance includes gel-styled spiky black hair, average stature, and his trademark orange T-shirt under his Academy City uniform. His disheveled look and constant skirmishes lead many to mistake him for a delinquent. Multiple characters harbor romantic feelings for him—dubbed "Kami-yan disease" by Motoharu Tsuchimikado—but he remains oblivious, pursuing no serious relationships. Friends Tsuchimikado and Aogami Pierce jokingly push him toward a harem, which he rejects.

Academically, he struggles as a Level 0, requiring remedial lessons. Yet he displays sharp intellect in combat tactics, physics calculations, and rapid problem-solving. Lessar notes his exceptional strategic brilliance despite academic flaws. Before pivotal battles, he vows declarations like "I’ll destroy that illusion," embodying his resolve to protect others’ hopes.
