Description
Chōun, also known by the name Sei, is a warrior who serves first under the lord Kousonsan before becoming a key general in the Shoku faction. Her entry into the story is dramatic and immediate, debuting on a battlefield where she single-handedly takes on an entire army of Yellow Turbans, fighting alone against overwhelming numbers. Her immense combat prowess is evident as she cuts down countless enemies, only encountering difficulty when the sheer number of corpses begins to pile up and impede her movements. This display of skill catches the attention of the protagonist, Kazuto, who recognizes her potential as a powerful ally.
In terms of personality, Chōun presents a calm and collected exterior, often carrying herself with a graceful and almost elegant demeanor. This surface-level serenity masks a playful and mischievous nature, as she frequently teases those around her for her own amusement, showing little sense of shame. She is generally straightforward and blunt. While she rarely loses her temper, there are two sure ways to provoke her: interfering with her personal supply of menma, a type of fermented bamboo shoot she obsessively consumes, or her alcohol. When angered, she does not explode with rage but instead becomes cold, calm, and deeply unsettling. Her offbeat tastes and the chaos she sometimes sows for fun lead many in the group to consider her the most eccentric member.
One of her most defining and peculiar traits is her secret identity as a masked vigilante she calls Kachou Kamen, or Butterfly Mask. Donning a simple butterfly mask over her eyes, she patrols the city delivering dramatic, grandiose speeches and posing in the style of a tokusatsu hero. The humor of the situation lies in the fact that her disguise is incredibly flimsy, consisting of only the mask while she wears her normal clothes and wields her signature spear. Despite the obviousness, almost no one in the story can recognize her, with only Kazuto and the strategist Koumei consistently seeing through the act. She becomes deeply immersed in this persona, creating elaborate and fanciful backstories for herself and taking immense pride when others praise the heroic Kachou Kamen, often fishing for compliments about her alter ego from those she has rescued.
Her role in the story evolves from a formidable ally to a central figure in Kazuto's growing army. After initially meeting him, she takes an immediate liking to him but decides to travel for a time, promising to return and join his cause if she finds no better master. She fulfills this pledge later, officially joining the Shoku faction alongside her companion Kouchuu. In this position, she proves to be far more than just a warrior. She possesses a sharp intellect and strategic acumen, unofficially handling military intelligence and commanding her troops with the efficiency of a modern commando unit, which is a testament to her leadership skills.
Despite her flirtatious and seductive front, Chōun has a notable and surprising layer of innocence, particularly regarding physical intimacy. She and Kouchuu consider themselves masters of love and frequently offer advice on romance. However, her early knowledge of sex is comically lacking, derived only from observing soldiers. She once believed the phrase "pillow games" referred to literal pillow fights. Despite this initial naivete, she learns very quickly and becomes one of the most knowledgeable and open members of the group, having no issues with the harem dynamic or more adventurous arrangements.
Her abilities are formidable and distinct. As a spearman, her style is defined not by raw power but by incredible speed and agility. Her technique is often described as a dance, a series of rapid, precise stabs that are both deadly and graceful. Her solo stand against the Yellow Turban army of 25,000 soldiers highlights her stamina and skill. Beyond her spear, she is also proficient in hand-to-hand combat, acrobatics, and can throw her butterfly masks with shuriken-like accuracy. The primary weakness in her combat prowess is a lack of raw, brute strength compared to some of her mightier peers. Throughout her journey, she remains a complex figure whose serene grace, playful teasing, bizarre heroic delusions, and genuine combat brilliance make her a memorable and invaluable member of the group.
