Description
Misaki Yata is a member of the red clan known as Homura, where he serves as one of the group’s raid captains and acts as its vanguard. He was born on July 20, 1993, and his original surname was different; he took the name Yata after his mother remarried when he was six years old. He spent part of his childhood in Shizume City and later moved to Chiyoda City, where he attended Himuka Middle School. There he met Saruhiko Fushimi, who became his closest friend. Together they encountered Mikoto Suoh, the Red King, and were invited to join Homura when they were fifteen. Yata’s clan insignia appears on his left collarbone, the same placement as Fushimi’s, a detail he takes pride in. He adopted the nickname Yatagarasu, referencing a three-legged crow spirit from Japanese folklore, which he uses to sound more formidable.
Yata is characterized by a boisterous, rude, and prideful demeanor. He is brash and brutal in combat, showing no hesitation when striking opponents, and he frequently curses when things do not go his way. He is sensitive about his short stature and reacts defensively when it is mentioned. Despite his aggressive exterior, he is deeply loyal to his comrades and especially respects Mikoto Suoh. He becomes noticeably shy and flustered around women. He strongly dislikes being addressed by his first name, Misaki, which he considers feminine, and will become hostile if someone uses it without permission. His motivations are rooted in his fierce loyalty to Homura and a desire to protect his friends and uphold the clan’s honor. He can be impulsive and quick to anger, but he also shows a nurturing side, being capable in housekeeping and cooking, and he cares for younger members such as Anna Kushina.
In the story of K: Seven Stories, Yata appears as a main character in the film Memory of Red – Burn and plays a key supporting role in Lost Small World – Ori no Mukou ni, which delves into his early relationship with Fushimi. His role within Homura is that of the front-line attacker, charging into battle without regard for his own safety. His fighting style relies on agility and direct offense, often using a skateboard as both a mode of transportation and a weapon. He can channel his red aura through the skateboard, causing it to ignite and increase its speed, and he can also generate flames from his body to enhance his strikes. In close quarters, he wields a baseball bat or a metal rod with considerable skill. His aura is among the strongest in the clan and can flare into a blazing tornado when he is enraged. Despite his small frame, he displays enhanced physical strength, able to push heavy objects with one arm. He also possesses excellent night vision, which contributes to his Yatagarasu moniker.
Yata’s key relationships are defined by his bond with Saruhiko Fushimi, his former best friend who later defected to the blue clan, Scepter 4. Their friendship was the most significant in Yata’s early life, but Fushimi’s betrayal and his subsequent antagonism left Yata with a lasting grudge. He still refuses to tolerate anyone else speaking badly of Fushimi, showing the depth of their complicated connection. Yata looks up to Mikoto Suoh as a mentor figure and idolizes him. He also maintains a rough but caring friendship with Rikio Kamamoto, a childhood friend who later becomes a fellow Homura member, and he sometimes acts as a caretaker for the young Anna Kushina, teaching her to play video games.
Over the course of the series, Yata undergoes notable development. His initial impulsiveness and recklessness are tempered by the losses he experiences, particularly the death of Mikoto Suoh and the ongoing rift with Fushimi. In Lost Small World, the audience sees the roots of his friendship with Fushimi and the events that led to their separation, giving depth to his motivations. As the story progresses, he becomes more willing to take on responsibility and to think beyond his own immediate reactions, growing into a more reliable member of Homura while still retaining his passionate and fiercely loyal core.
