Description
Misaki Yata, known as Yatagarasu or Yata-chan, serves as a core member of HOMRA. He exhibits a fiery, impulsive, and easily provoked nature, often reacting with aggression to perceived insults, especially concerning his height or feminine-sounding first name, which he vehemently dislikes and forbids others from using. Despite this volatile exterior, he displays profound loyalty to HOMRA and deep respect for its members, particularly leader Mikoto Suoh, treating the group's insignia as a symbol of immense pride. His interactions betray a juvenile awkwardness around females, marked by blushing, averted eyes, and stuttering, a stark contrast to his usual boldness.
Yata possesses spiky chestnut hair, hazel eyes, and stands 167 cm tall, harboring noted insecurity about his height. He is typically seen in a black beanie, a white V-neck shirt with blue lining over a black tank top, dark green shorts, blue-and-gold sneakers, and a red sweater tied around his waist. He habitually carries a skateboard, wears headphones around his neck, and bears the HOMRA insignia marked on his left collarbone. In combat, he primarily wields his skateboard, a baseball bat, or a metal rod. His exceptional night vision earned him the moniker "Yatagarasu" (eight-span crow).
Yata's history traces back to middle school, where he formed a close friendship with Saruhiko Fushimi over video games. Their bond deepened when Yata witnessed Fushimi's abusive home life; during a visit, he confronted Fushimi's father, Niki, who subjected them to psychological torment, including threats and a mock Russian roulette with fireworks. This traumatic experience solidified their mutual reliance, leading them to move into an apartment together. Later, they participated in a JUNGLE mission with Fushimi's cousin Aya Oogai, which ended in failure and nearly killed Fushimi. Yata sought Mikoto Suoh's help for rescue, and both subsequently joined HOMRA, with Yata developing fervent admiration for Mikoto.
Their friendship shattered when Fushimi defected to Scepter 4. Yata confronted him in an alley, invoking HOMRA's pride, only to witness Fushimi burn his insignia and express contempt for the clan. Enraged, Yata vowed to kill Fushimi, severing their bond. This betrayal left a lasting impact, manifesting in hostile encounters where Yata would shout at Fushimi across distances. He later reflected that he could no longer hear Fushimi's voice as he once could, symbolizing their emotional chasm.
In the "K: Seven Stories" films, "Lost Small World" depicts Yata's early dynamic with Fushimi, including the incident with Niki and their failed JUNGLE mission, highlighting their initial closeness and shared struggles. "Circle Vision" shows Yata reminiscing about his fiery days alongside friends, underscoring his dedication to HOMRA's camaraderie. One scene involves him confiscating a JUNGLE member's PDA, dismissing externally granted power as inferior to the authentic bonds and pride within HOMRA, though he briefly empathizes with the clansman's yearning to escape a "small cramped world." This moment is juxtaposed with a distant, silent encounter with Fushimi, emphasizing their unresolved tension.
Yata's personal interests include physical activities, video games, and cooking—a skill taught by his mother. He harbors a fear of ghosts, fleeing during ghost stories. While trivia notes a reconciliation with Fushimi, their onscreen interactions in official media remain strained, marked by unresolved conflict and emotional distance.
