Description
Izumo Kusanagi, born in Kyoto as the youngest of several siblings, relocated to Tokyo for high school under his uncle Mizuomi's care. While attending school, he assisted at Mizuomi's bar, HOMRA, and forged a close bond with classmate Mikoto Suoh. This friendship expanded when they encountered Tatara Totsuka, a persistent middle school admirer of Mikoto. After Totsuka suffered a severe beating and hospitalization, Kusanagi and Mikoto visited him, initiating their trio's dynamic despite Kusanagi's initial warnings for Totsuka to avoid their perilous world.
Upon Mizuomi's death, Kusanagi inherited HOMRA, which became the namesake and base for the Red Clan. As second-in-command, he operates as the clan's strategist and intelligence hub, leveraging underground connections and discreet dealings to gather critical information. Though composed during crises, he reacts fiercely to damage inflicted on his bar. Kusanagi speaks in a distinctive Kyoto dialect, is fluent in English, and openly identifies as a womanizer and avid smoker, often engaging in flirtations.
Kusanagi wields fire manipulation through his cigarette lighter, harnessing the Red Clan's aura for combat with a range of tens of meters. His physical capabilities include athlete-level strength, speed, and durability, complemented by hypersonic reactions allowing bullet evasion. He ranks as HOMRA's second-strongest combatant after Mikoto.
His defining loyalty to Mikoto endured from adolescence into adulthood. After Mikoto's death, Kusanagi stabilized young Red King Anna Kushina and maintained HOMRA's operations. An unexpected alliance formed with Scepter 4's Seri Awashima during joint investigations, including the search for Anna in "Missing Kings." Their cooperation persisted into later events, such as Kusanagi contacting Awashima from Dresden while probing the Silver King's origins and the Dresden Slate.
Post-Mikoto, Kusanagi traveled to Dresden to investigate artifacts from WWII bombings, specifically cataloged under "unknown ownership," seeking truths to aid his clan. During this mission, his ongoing communication with Awashima highlighted their cross-clan collaboration, reinforcing his role as HOMRA's protector and intelligence broker in safeguarding Anna and confronting threats to the clan system.
