Description
Ichiro is a male cockroach and a central figure in the 1987 film Twilight of the Cockroaches. He belongs to the Hosino Tribe, a community of cockroaches living in the apartment of a human bachelor named Saito. His family holds a position of privilege within this society, as his father is numbered among the tribe's wealthiest and most influential members. As a result of this sheltered upbringing, Ichiro begins the story in a state of complacency, lacking many of the essential survival skills typical of his kind, most notably the ability to fly.
In terms of personality, Ichiro is characterized by his naive optimism and a gentle, loving nature. He possesses an honest and sincere disposition, which forms a stark contrast to the more aggressive and militaristic Hans. He is presented as a soft and sensitive individual who is deeply devoted to his fiancée, Naomi. His defining trait is his loyalty; he seeks a stable, peaceful life and is content within the perceived safety of the human's apartment.
At the start of the story, Ichiro's primary motivation is to build a secure future with Naomi. He believes firmly in the harmony between the cockroaches and humans, once asserting with conviction that humans love cockroaches even when faced with contradictory evidence. His role in the narrative is initially that of the domestic and unexciting love interest, a counterpart to the mysterious warrior Hans, whose arrival disrupts the tribe's tranquility. As the human inhabitants begin a genocidal extermination campaign, Ichiro is forced to abandon his passive worldview. Facing this crisis, he sheds his former complacency and actively participates in the desperate struggle for survival, learning vital foraging and evasion techniques.
His key relationships define much of his journey. His relationship with Naomi is central; despite her dissatisfaction with his lack of excitement and her temporary infatuation and disappearance with Hans, Ichiro remains devoted and accepts her return, proceeding with their wedding. His rivalry with Hans evolves during the conflict, transforming from jealousy into a tense alliance forged by their common enemy, though they agree to resolve their personal differences after the battle. An elder roach provides a crucial assessment of his character, telling Naomi that Ichiro is honest while Hans is strong.
Ichiro undergoes significant development throughout the film. He moves from a state of blissful ignorance about the dangers of the human world to a harsh awakening when the elders reveal that the tribe's safety was a lie, based not on a truce but on the human's apathy. His most notable development is his overcoming of a personal limitation. In a moment of peak desperation, he learns to fly, an ability he did not possess before, which symbolizes his final adaptation and newfound determination in the face of annihilation. Tragically, his development and triumph are cut short when he is shot down and killed by the human Saito using an airsoft gun. Despite his death, his legacy endures through Naomi's offspring, as several of her children bear his physical resemblance, confirming his genetic line continues.
