Movie
Description
Jessie's Wobbuffet is a Psychic-type Pokémon originally belonging to trainer Benny, who sought to trade it away due to disinterest. During a Team Rocket scheme involving a counterfeit trading machine, Jessie accidentally exchanged her Lickitung for this Wobbuffet when her Poké Ball landed on a functional trading device. Though initially annoyed by Wobbuffet's constant, uninvited exits from its Poké Ball, Jessie eventually accepted it as a permanent team member.
Wobbuffet exhibits a vacuous, air-headed personality, often blindly following teammates and irritating them with dopey behavior. It habitually emerges autonomously from its Poké Ball, especially during Team Rocket's motto recitals, instinctively returning only when severely distressed. Despite its goofiness, Wobbuffet displays fierce loyalty to Jessie and Team Rocket. It occasionally demonstrates unexpected strategic intelligence, ignoring Jessie's commands when recognizing superior battle tactics. Wobbuffet has also shown capacity for romantic affection, falling for a Kirlia it shielded from capture and later bonding deeply with Dr. White's Wobbuffet, yet ultimately choosing loyalty to Jessie over remaining with its mate.
Rarely deployed in direct combat, Wobbuffet primarily uses Counter and Mirror Coat to retaliate against physical and special attacks, respectively, sometimes providing strategic defensive advantages. It employed Bide once, a move inconsistent with its usual abilities.
Wobbuffet accompanied Team Rocket through Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh, largely serving as comic relief. It remained at Team Rocket headquarters during the Unova arc but reappeared in Kalos, demonstrating greater battle competence by resisting stronger attacks and participating more actively in schemes. Temporal distortions in Sinnoh once devolved it into Wynaut and silenced Meowth, with both restored after the crisis.
In Kalos, during "A Fork in the Road! A Parting of the Ways!", Wobbuffet considered leaving Jessie to stay with Dr. White's Wobbuffet. However, it returned to save Jessie from a Rhyperior, using Counter to deflect attacks. Meowth translated that Wobbuffet chose loyalty to Jessie over its mate.
At the Alola League, Wobbuffet battled James's Mareanie in a staged match. When Mareanie unexpectedly fought seriously, James and Mareanie overcame Wobbuffet's defenses.
Beyond battle, Wobbuffet has acquired diverse skills, including making Poké Puffs for Pokémon Showcases, driving vehicles, and posing in Team Rocket disguises. Its tail occasionally exhibits independent eye movement.
In the short film "Pikachu to Pokémon Ongakutai," Wobbuffet appears as part of an ensemble cast of Pokémon.
