TV-Series
Description
In the Diamond & Pearl series of the anime, Gary Oak is introduced having undergone a significant transformation from his earlier days as a brash and arrogant Pokémon trainer. Hailing from Pallet Town and the grandson of the renowned Professor Oak, Gary has shifted his life’s focus away from training for league competitions to pursuing a career as a Pokémon researcher. During this period, he is based in the Sinnoh region, where he works directly as an assistant to the esteemed Professor Rowan, dedicating himself to the scientific study of Pokémon.

Gary’s personality in this series is markedly calmer, friendlier, and more grounded than in his first appearances. He maintains a nonchalant and level-headed demeanor even when faced with dangerous or high-pressure situations. No longer the boastful rival who traveled with a cheering squad, he has become patient, tolerant, and respectful, particularly towards those older than him as well as towards younger individuals, often acting as a calm and reliable older brother figure. While he can still make arrogant or playful remarks, especially when pushed to his limit or when interacting with his longtime acquaintance Ash Ketchum, these moments are far more subdued. He is generally considerate and tends to avoid unnecessary arguments, preferring to de-escalate conflicts rather than engage in them.

Gary's primary motivation is no longer personal victory or proving his superiority as a trainer. Instead, he is driven by a deep passion for Pokémon research, with a particular interest in rare and Fossil Pokémon. A notable achievement early in this new path is his success in reviving an Aerodactyl from an amber fossil. His role in the story is therefore multifaceted: he is a working researcher, a helpful ally, and a source of mature guidance. He serves as a living example of personal growth and demonstrates that a trainer's journey can evolve in different directions. He steps in to assist Ash and his friends, Dawn and Brock, during critical moments, offering strategic help, sharing his deep knowledge of Pokémon, and providing a grounded perspective.

Throughout the Diamond & Pearl series, Gary’s actions and interactions reveal how much he has changed. His relationship with Ash is central to this development. While their rivalry is no longer the fierce and hostile competition it once was, the bond remains significant. They are more like old friends or even brothers who respect each other's abilities. Gary’s rivalry has become a friendly, supportive one; he scolds Ash for overconfidence when necessary but also recognizes his growth and motivates him indirectly by setting an example of dedication and hard work. This new dynamic is symbolized by the two halves of a broken Poké Ball they have kept since childhood, which now serves as a reminder for both of them to persevere and do their best. When Dawn first meets him, she even mistakes him for a poet like his grandfather, indicating how much his demeanor has gravitated towards that of a thoughtful intellectual.

Gary’s skills and abilities remain formidable, though he applies them differently. He is still a highly capable Pokémon battler, but he prefers to stay out of trouble and resolve problems peacefully. However, when the situation demands it, particularly when faced with villains or threats to wild Pokémon, he does not hesitate to fight. His Pokémon team, including powerful partners like his newly evolved Electivire and his loyal Umbreon, are exceptionally strong and well-trained. For example, he uses his Electivire to protect a group of endangered Shieldon from the clutches of Pokémon Hunter J, coordinating with Ash to sabotage her airship. He also provides Ash with a Razor Fang, explaining its purpose in evolving his Gligar into a Gliscor. Working alongside Professor Rowan, Gary also conducts research on Legendary Pokémon at Lake Valor, attempting to protect Azelf from Hunter J and the villainous Team Galactic, and later helps monitor the dimensional disturbances caused by the Legendary Dialga and Palkia. Through all these actions, Gary proves that he has successfully channeled his ambition and knowledge into becoming a dedicated and effective Pokémon researcher.
