Description
Daisuke Jigen operates as the primary marksman and steadfast partner to master thief Arsène Lupin III within their global heist network. His origins vary across official media: one account identifies him as an American gangster raised in the Bronx or Chicago, joining the New York mob young and receiving firearms training from figures like Joe of Spades before fleeing to Japan. There, he adopted a Japanese identity and the name "Jigen"—derived from the Japanese word for "dimension". An alternate narrative, notably in *Lupin Zero*, depicts him and Lupin as childhood acquaintances in 1960s Japan, with Jigen already mastering marksmanship in youth.

His firearm expertise is unmatched, specializing in a 0.3-second quick-draw and near-superhuman accuracy with his Smith & Wesson Model 19 revolver. He acquired this weapon tragically: while working for the Italian mob, he claimed it after his boss's wife, Cicciolina, accidentally killed her husband. Jigen assumed blame to protect her but later killed her when misinterpreting her suicide attempt as a threat. He prizes the revolver for its stopping power and misfire resistance. His broad-brimmed fedora aids aiming and target acquisition, though he shoots accurately without it. Proficiency extends to machine guns, sniper rifles, anti-tank weaponry, and vehicular operation, including aircraft and tanks.

Jigen balances pragmatism with fierce loyalty. He often counters Lupin's impulsiveness with mob-honed realism yet remains devoted to their partnership. Romantic betrayals and losses fuel his cynicism, driving distrust of Fujiko Mine and irritation at Lupin's involvement with her. He avoids killing women and children as a rule but will lethally neutralize immediate threats, as shown in Part 2 Episode 26. A quick temper provokes retaliation against insults or physical confrontations from allies like Lupin or Goemon Ishikawa XIII. Despite his gruffness, he displays ironic humor and relishes heists. Personal vices include heavy smoking—preferring bent Pall Mall or Marlboro cigarettes—and consuming Scotch, bourbon, or beer with high alcohol tolerance.

Physically, Jigen appears tall and lean at approximately 178 cm and 70 kg, with unkempt black mullet hair and a chin curtain beard. His attire is minimalist: dark suits, light dress shirts, flat-end ties, and lace-up boots. The fedora remains iconic, rarely removed except during mourning or formal events. Wardrobe variations occur, like a teal blazer and dark red shirt in *Daisuke Jigen's Gravestone*, but dark suits and hats dominate OVAs and TV specials.

His character evolved significantly from early portrayals. The original manga introduced him as a cynical hitman hired to assassinate Lupin, their dynamic shifting between rivalry and reluctant collaboration. Later manga and anime solidified him as Lupin's closest friend. Tragic backstories recur, including his brother's death at the hands of Kido and his sister's endangerment during a coerced assassination attempt against Lupin. These elements, alongside romantic losses, deepen his world-weariness while reinforcing loyalty to the core group.
