Description
Sōgo Okita captains the Shinsengumi's first division, a police force in Edo. Orphaned young, he was raised exclusively by his older sister Mitsuba Okita, fostering an initially aloof and distant demeanor. He received early swordsmanship training under Isao Kondō at his dojo, developing profound, enduring loyalty to Kondō, whom he regards as a brother. His relationship with Tōshirō Hijikata, who joined later, turned strained due to jealousy over Kondō’s attention and Hijikata’s cold rejection of Mitsuba’s romantic feelings. This fuels Sōgo’s persistent ambition to usurp Hijikata’s vice-commander position.

Sōgo possesses light brown hair, red-brown eyes, and a youthful, frequently noted handsome face. He typically wears the standard Shinsengumi captain’s uniform: a dark jacket with gold accents, black trousers, white cravat, and boots. His signature accessory is a red sleep mask featuring eye markings, used during frequent naps while skipping duties. During the Dekoboko Arc, a curse transformed him into a female "Grade A beauty," wearing a yellow short kimono and black tabi socks.

His personality is dominantly sadistic, earning him epithets like "King of the Planet of Sadists." He speaks with blunt, deadpan delivery and often inflicts violence—particularly targeting Hijikata through schemes ranging from framing to assassination attempts. Despite this, he harbors complex respect for Hijikata, later acknowledging him among his "three rotten friends," alongside Kondō and Gintoki Sakata. This sadism contrasts with vulnerability; he once admitted his cruelty stems from deep-seated insecurity. He reacts violently to insults against Kondō or Mitsuba, demonstrating fierce protectiveness. Unexpected moral depth surfaces, like accepting blame to shield others during the Rokkaku Arc or opposing exploitative systems like the Rengokukan fighting ring. His rivalry with Kagura involves frequent petty competitions, though he insists he alone must defeat her.

Recognized as the Shinsengumi’s strongest swordsman, Sōgo wields exceptional combat skills. He bisects vehicles, demolishes concrete structures, deflects sniper bullets, and fights evenly with opponents like Kamui. His primary weapon is the Kiku-Ichimonji RX-78 katana, featuring a built-in MP3 player and a sentient scabbard named Saya. He also frequently employs a bazooka for combat and harassing Hijikata.

Key relationships define him: Mitsuba remains his most revered figure, evoking uncharacteristic respect and emotional vulnerability—he wept at her deathbed after eliminating her exploitative fiancé. His loyalty to Kondō is absolute, though he mockingly calls him "Gorilla." Despite antagonizing Hijikata, he risks his life for him during critical missions, revealing underlying camaraderie. He interacts with Gintoki primarily to torment Hijikata but acknowledges their friendship, bribing Gintoki to pose as his "best friend" for Mitsuba’s sake.
