Pneumococcus, also called Pneumonia Coccus or Streptococcus pneumoniae, is a species of pathogenic Gram-positive bacteria that appears in the anime Cells at Work! as a major threat in the first episode. The pneumococci are depicted as tall, skeletal, non-humanoid creatures with a purple armor-like shell and long, hooked appendages, and their unsettling design marks them as clearly hostile invaders within the body.
