Description
Ibukimaru, also known as Kido Ibukimaru, is a character from the sixth anime adaptation of GeGeGe no Kitarō. He is an ancient oni who serves as one of the Four Treasonous Generals, a group of powerful and dangerous yokai imprisoned in Hell. His physical appearance is that of a tall, imposing oni with long black hair tied back in a voluminous style, with an additional lock of hair tied in front of his right ear. He has a single horn on his forehead, the lower half of which is gray and the upper half red, and his golden eyes are marked by red lines beneath them. He wears traditional Japanese clothing from a bygone era.

Ibukimaru is the son of Shuten-Dōji, one of the most infamous oni in Japanese mythology. Long ago, he was part of the oni clan on Mount Ōe, which terrorized Kyoto and kidnapped many people. His perspective changed dramatically when he met a noblewoman named Chihaya. Unlike his father, Ibukimaru fell in love with her, and the two fled together to live in a remote village, where they found a simple but happy life among the human villagers. This relationship was the catalyst for his entire character arc, as he developed a deep love for Chihaya that contrasted sharply with his initial contempt for humanity, whom he had previously viewed as little more than animals.

Tragedy struck when Ibukimaru was away from the village. The leader of a neighboring domain attacked and burned the settlement, slaughtering all the inhabitants. To mock and enrage him, Chihaya's body was taken, leaving only her head behind. Overcome with grief and a thirst for vengeance, Ibukimaru retaliated by slaughtering all those responsible and burning down the entire domain. For this massacre, he was captured and imprisoned in Hell. His primary motivation, after being released or escaping, is not revenge but to find the lost body of Chihaya. His ultimate wish is to reunite her head with her remains so that her soul can finally find peace and rest.

In the story, Ibukimaru kidnaps a young girl named Mana Inuyama, who possesses powerful spiritual abilities. He needs her to act as a yorimashi, a medium, to help him locate Chihaya's body, which lies at the bottom of a reservoir created by a dam. This brings him into direct conflict with Kitarō and Isurugi Rei, who is hunting the Treasonous Generals. Rei attempts to fight Ibukimaru but is easily overpowered, as Ibukimaru reveals that the Kidōshu spells Rei uses were actually created by oni. During the battle, Ibukimaru displays a mindset rooted in his ancient perspective, sarcastically pointing out to Kitarō that if humans have the discretion to destroy nature, then he has the discretion to destroy their creations.

His key relationships are central to his identity. His bond with Chihaya is his defining feature, transforming him from a creature who despised humans to one who would do anything for a human woman. His relationship with his father, Shuten-Dōji, is defined by rejection, as his father refused to accept his love for a human. With Mana, he is not cruel but rather uses her for his specific purpose. He serves as a formidable antagonist and a dark mirror for Isurugi Rei, as both have been driven by a desire for revenge. Ibukimaru ultimately warns Rei not to let hatred consume him, speaking from his own experience of the destruction it can cause.

In terms of character development, Ibukimaru begins as a figure of terrifying legend, one of the most evil yokai in history. However, as his past is revealed, he becomes a deeply tragic figure. He does not justify the massacre he committed but is clear-eyed about his own karmic debt and accepts his punishment. When his goal is finally achieved with Kitarō's help, and Chihaya's spirit appears, smiles, and fades away, his character arc is resolved. Having completed his sole purpose, he willingly surrenders to Enma-Daiō, the ruler of Hell, and returns to his imprisonment.

Ibukimaru possesses a range of notable abilities common to powerful oni. He has superhuman physical characteristics, including immense strength and durability. He wields energy projection, able to fire powerful energy slashes from a distance that can destroy large structures. He is capable of flight and has demonstrated regeneration, such as when he quickly formed a new arm after one was shot off. He can also absorb energy, as shown when he drained electricity from Kitarō. Furthermore, he can transform his arms into a more powerful form called kijin arms. His control over oni-based techniques also allows him to nullify attacks that use similar power sources. Ultimately, Ibukimaru is a powerful and sorrowful figure whose story is one of love, catastrophic loss, and the quest for a final, peaceful rest for the one he loved.
