Tōru Furuya

Description
Tōru Furuya is a prominent Japanese actor, voice actor, and narrator born July 31, 1953, in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. He began his career in entertainment as a child, joining the Himawari Theatre Group at the age of five. His voice acting debut came when he was ten, though he balanced his early career with his education, later studying economics at Meiji Gakuin University. He has been affiliated with the talent management firm Aoni Production since 1982.

Furuya's career is marked by several defining and long-running roles that have made him a household name in Japan. He gained early recognition for his first major lead role as Hyūma Hoshi in the baseball anime Star of the Giants in 1968. He achieved iconic status with his portrayal of Amuro Ray, the protagonist of the original Mobile Suit Gundam (1979), a role he would reprise in numerous sequels and films for decades. This connection to the Gundam franchise is one of his most significant professional associations.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Furuya lent his voice to a remarkable number of beloved characters. He is well known as Yamcha in the Dragon Ball franchise, Pegasus Seiya in Saint Seiya, Kyōsuke Kasuga in Kimagure Orange Road, and Mamoru Chiba, also known as Tuxedo Mask, in Sailor Moon. He has also voiced Mario in several anime adaptations and commercials, beginning with the 1986 film Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach!. His later notable roles include Sabo in One Piece and Rei Furuya, also known as Tōru Amuro, in Detective Conan, a character whose name is a reference to Furuya himself and his iconic Gundam role.

Furuya has occasionally used the pseudonym Noboru Sōgetsu for specific roles, most notably for the character Ribbons Almark in Mobile Suit Gundam 00, while using his real name for the series' narration. His distinctive tenor voice made him a popular choice for energetic and handsome young male leads, though he has also portrayed comedic characters. Beyond anime, he is the best-known Japanese dubbing voice for Hong Kong action star Yuen Biao.

His contributions to the voice acting industry have been recognized with several awards. In 2008, he received the Kei Tomiyama Award at the second Seiyu Awards. Later, in 2019, he won the award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the 13th Seiyu Awards for his performance as Rei Furuya in Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer.
