Description
Hiroshi Shiba is the protagonist of the mecha anime series Kotetsu Jeeg. He is initially established as a talented and ambitious young race car driver with a promising future in the sport, but his life takes a dramatic turn following a catastrophic laboratory accident that leaves him mortally wounded. His father, Professor Shiba, a brilliant scientist and archaeologist, saves his life through radical means, transforming him into a cyborg and implanting a powerful, ancient bronze bell from the lost kingdom of Jamatai within his chest. This life-saving procedure is initially kept a secret from Hiroshi himself, and its existence only becomes apparent after he survives a severe crash during a drag race completely unharmed, revealing his new, superhuman durability.

This revelation quickly leads to a larger destiny, as the subterranean Jamatai Kingdom, led by the malevolent Queen Himika, awakens from its ancient slumber to reclaim the surface world. Professor Shiba is murdered by the queen's henchmen, who are seeking the powerful bronze bell, but not before he implants his own consciousness into a supercomputer at a specialized defense base. From this computerized state, the professor reveals to Hiroshi his true purpose: to pilot the giant robot Kotetsu Jeeg, which his father designed to counter the Jamatai threat. In a unique transformation method, Hiroshi himself becomes the head of the giant robot, while the rest of its magnetically assembled limbs and body are launched from a support jet called the Big Shooter, piloted by his father's young assistant, Miwa Uzuki.

Hiroshi Shiba is characterized by a classic hot-blooded and short-tempered personality, common to many heroes of the super robot genre, but he is also defined by a more introspective and vulnerable side. Despite his role as a defender of Earth, he harbors significant self-doubt and insecurity stemming directly from his cybernetic enhancements. He struggles with a persistent fear that his robotic nature makes him an unnatural freak in the eyes of others, and this internal conflict colors his interactions and his sense of identity. His role in the story is therefore twofold: he is the chosen champion who must use the giant robot Jeeg to fight off the monster Haniwa robots and the forces of Queen Himika, while also grappling with the personal cost of his transformation and the responsibilities placed upon him by his father's legacy.

Key relationships define Hiroshi's journey and development throughout the series. His relationship with his father is particularly strained, rooted in years of neglect due to the professor's obsessive research. This tension only begins to heal through their shared battles, even after Professor Shiba exists only as a consciousness within a computer. His dynamic with Miwa Uzuki, his combat partner who supports him from the Big Shooter, deepens from a platonic kinship into a profound affection over the course of their shared struggles. This connection is notably reaffirmed fifty years later in the sequel series, Kotetsushin Jeeg, where an aged Miwa (now using the name Yagyu) and a physically unchanged Hiroshi are reunited and openly acknowledge their enduring feelings for one another. Outside of his direct mission, Hiroshi maintains a friendly but intense rivalry with fellow mecha pilot Koji Kabuto, characterized by competitive banter and motorcycle races, yet underpinned by mutual respect. Despite his personal turmoil, he is fiercely protective of his allies and family, which includes his mother, his younger sister Mayumi, and an orphaned mechanic named Chibi.

In terms of abilities, Hiroshi's cybernetic body grants him several distinct powers even before he assumes his role as Jeeg. In his human form, he possesses incredible durability, allowing him to withstand extreme physical trauma, and he is also capable of breathing in the vacuum of space. By clashing his fists together and shouting the command Change Cyborg, he activates a suit of powerful armor that significantly augments his speed, strength, and durability, allowing him to run for miles and leap great distances in seconds. Finally, while in this armored state, he can shout Build Up, which transforms him into a ball of light before he reconstitutes to form the head of the giant robot Kotetsu Jeeg, completing the combination to battle the colossal monsters threatening the world.
