Description
Kyosuke Kasuga is the male protagonist of Kimagure Orange Road, a high school student caught in a complex web of emotions and supernatural heritage. He comes from a family of psychics, known as the Kasuga clan, though he often tries to downplay or hide these abilities to live a normal life. Physically, he is depicted as a tall, lean teenager with dark, unkempt hair and a fairly average build, making him blend into crowds despite his extraordinary lineage. His background includes moving frequently due to his family’s secret, and at the start of the story, he has just relocated to a new town to attend a new high school, hoping for a fresh start without the complications of his powers.
Personality-wise, Kyosuke is fundamentally kind-hearted, well-meaning, and somewhat idealistic, but he is also indecisive, easily flustered, and prone to overthinking. He genuinely wants to do the right thing, but his shyness and fear of hurting others often lead him into awkward situations. His psychic abilities—telepathy, telekinesis, time manipulation, and limited reality-warping—are a constant source of internal conflict. He tries not to use them, but when his emotions run high or he panics, he often triggers them involuntarily, leading to comedic or dramatic consequences.
Kyosuke’s primary motivation is to navigate adolescence and romance without revealing his family secret. He longs for stability, friendship, and love, especially after a life of constant moves. Deeper down, he seeks validation and acceptance for who he is, powers and all, though he rarely admits this even to himself. His immediate goal is to win the affection of the mysterious and beautiful Madoka Ayukawa, while also maintaining his friendship with the cheerful and direct Hikaru Hiyama.
In the story, Kyosuke serves as the central point of view character, and the plot revolves around his romantic indecision. He is torn between his intense feelings for Madoka and his genuine affection for Hikaru, who has openly declared her love for him. Much of the narrative tension comes from his inability to choose, his misuse or accidental activation of psychic powers, and the everyday trials of high school life, often with supernatural twists.
Key relationships define Kyosuke’s journey. His bond with Madoka Ayukawa is the emotional core: she is cool, independent, and initially distant, but she shares a deep connection with him that neither fully understands at first. Kyosuke admires her strength and hidden vulnerability, and she is one of the few people who learns his secret. With Hikaru Hiyama, he shares a warm, playful relationship, though he never fully reciprocates her romantic feelings due to his fixation on Madoka, leading to guilt and hesitation. His family—his sisters Kurumi and Manami, and his parents—provide comic relief and occasional advice, but also remind him of the burden of being a psychic. His best friend, Kazuya Hatta, is a typical comic sidekick who often misunderstands situations and amplifies Kyosuke’s troubles.
Kyosuke undergoes significant development over the course of the story. He begins as a passive, reactive teenager, letting circumstances push him along. Through repeated emotional trials, particularly the love triangle, he gradually learns to take responsibility for his actions and feelings. The climax forces him to make a definitive choice between Madoka and Hikaru, representing his growth from indecision to maturity. Notably, he becomes more accepting of his psychic powers, using them not as a crutch but as a part of himself he can control and even rely on when necessary. By the end, he is more confident, honest, and ready to face adult commitments.
In terms of notable abilities, Kyosuke’s psychic powers are his most defining trait. He can move objects with his mind (telekinesis), read surface thoughts (telepathy), travel short distances by teleportation, and even rewind time for brief periods—though the latter causes him nosebleeds and exhaustion. He can also create illusions, duplicate objects, and perform minor reality alterations when emotionally charged. These abilities are inconsistent and often triggered by stress or strong feelings, making him both powerful and unreliable. In everyday life, he is otherwise an average student with no particular athletic or academic brilliance, though he plays a passable guitar.
