Description
Kyosuke Kasuga is the teenage male protagonist of Kimagure Orange Road. He is a first-year high school student who has recently moved with his family to a new town. Kyosuke comes from a unique lineage: his entire family possesses powerful psychic abilities, including telekinesis, telepathy, and time manipulation. Unlike some of his more flamboyant relatives, Kyosuke tries to keep these powers a secret, desiring nothing more than to live an ordinary, peaceful life.
In terms of personality, Kyosuke is kind-hearted, earnest, and generally easygoing, but he is also indecisive and prone to overthinking, especially in matters of the heart. He is easily flustered and often finds himself caught in awkward situations, many of which are exacerbated by his own psychic mishaps or the interference of his younger twin sisters, Kurumi and Manami. Despite his occasional cowardice and tendency to panic, Kyosuke has a strong moral core and genuinely cares about the feelings of those around him.
Kyosuke’s main motivation is to navigate adolescence without exposing his psychic abilities or ruining his chances with the girl he falls for at first sight, the beautiful and strong-willed Madoka Ayukawa. He is driven by a desire for acceptance and normalcy, as well as a deep-seated wish to protect Madoka from both external threats and his own unpredictable powers. Over the course of the story, his central challenge becomes balancing his love for Madoka with the persistent affections of his childhood friend and classmate, Hikaru Hiyama, to whom he has unintentionally given the wrong impression.
In the story’s structure, Kyosuke serves as the primary point-of-view character. The plot largely revolves around his romantic and social dilemmas, often triggered by his powers malfunctioning at the worst possible moments—such as freezing time during an embarrassing scene or accidentally reading someone’s surface thoughts. His role is that of a well-meaning but flawed hero whose inner conflicts drive the series’ blend of comedy, romance, and light drama.
Key relationships define much of his development. His bond with Madoka Ayukawa is the emotional core: she is initially aloof and mysterious, but as they grow closer, Kyosuke learns to appreciate her vulnerable side. Their relationship forces him to mature, make difficult choices, and take responsibility for his actions. In contrast, his relationship with Hikaru Hiyama is warm and affectionate but built on a misunderstanding; Kyosuke’s inability to be honest with Hikaru leads to much of the series’ tension. His twin sisters, Kurumi and Manami, frequently spy on him and use their powers for their own amusement, but they also genuinely support him when he is in genuine trouble. His best friend, Kazuya Hatta (often called "Jingoro"), provides comic relief and blunt advice, while his rival, Seiji Komatsu, constantly schemes to win Madoka’s affection, though Kyosuke rarely sees him as a serious threat.
Kyosuke undergoes noticeable development from a passive, reactive teenager to a more decisive young adult. Early in the series, he often avoids confronting his feelings and lets circumstances dictate his actions. As the story progresses, particularly toward the climax of the original manga, he learns that using his powers to escape emotional responsibility only causes more pain. The resolution of the love triangle forces him to make a clear, mature choice—rejecting Hikaru gently and committing fully to Madoka. This moment marks the peak of his growth, as he stops relying on psychic shortcuts and accepts the consequences of his decisions.
In terms of abilities, Kyosuke possesses various psychic powers, though he is not always in full control of them. His most frequently used ability is teleportation, which he employs to escape tight spots or retrieve distant objects. He can also freeze time temporarily, read minds (usually inadvertently), and move objects with telekinesis. On rare occasions, he has demonstrated limited time travel and the ability to transfer his consciousness into photographs. However, his powers are emotionally sensitive—when he is stressed, frightened, or aroused, they tend to activate uncontrollably, often leading to comedic or problematic outcomes. Unlike some psychic characters, Kyosuke rarely uses his abilities for personal gain beyond trying to avoid embarrassment or help someone in need. His real growth involves learning that relying on these powers to solve emotional problems is a mistake, and he gradually becomes more confident in his non-psychic self.
