Description
Adele is a witch and Western yōkai appearing in the 2018 anime adaptation. She possesses fair skin, long white hair featuring braided sections secured by a purple clip, and striking red irises with purple pupils and yellow centers. Her attire consists of a dark green suit accented with yellow trim, a matching mantle, white gloves, and a unique red metallic glove worn on her right hand; this glove is destroyed during her final battle and never replaced.
Driven by deep devotion to Backbeard and commitment to her mission, Adele initially presents as subservient to his will. This facade conceals her true plan: to protect her younger sister Agnès by surpassing her in magical skill and replacing her as the nucleus of Backbeard's Brigadoon Project—a ritual demanding a witch's life sacrifice. Her inability to reveal this plan creates a rift, as Agnès misinterprets Adele's actions as cold allegiance to Backbeard. Following her plan's failure, Adele's genuine personality surfaces—meek and self-sacrificing, prioritizing Agnès's safety above her own life and pride.
Adele's history revolves around her bond with Agnès and their mother. As children, she witnessed Agnès's uncontrolled magic attracting Backbeard, who designated Agnès for the Brigadoon Project. Their mother sacrificed herself under Backbeard's orders to protect Agnès, prompting Adele to dedicate herself to mastering magic to take Agnès's place in the ritual. Years later, serving as Backbeard's female shōgun, Adele commands Western yōkai including Wolfgang, Carmilla, and Victor Frankenstein. When Agnès steals the crucial Ring of Arcana for the project, Adele pursues her to Japan, igniting the Great Yōkai War. She burns the GeGeGe Forest using incendiary stones and attempts to reclaim the ring but is defeated in battle by Kitarō.
After Backbeard deems her power insufficient for the ritual and attacks her, forcing Agnès's submission, a severely injured Adele gives Mana Inuyama a multicolored gem to restore Kitarō's spiritual power. She pleads for help to reach Agnès during the ritual and sacrifices herself to remove the Ring of Arcana from Agnès's finger. This act destroys the ring and halts Backbeard. Adele survives, recuperates in the GeGeGe Forest, and later pays respects at Miminaga's grave. She accepts Agnès's proposal to travel the world together, reconciling as sisters. In subsequent story arcs, she occasionally returns to aid Kitarō's allies, such as helping defeat Kyubi no Kitsune by disrupting supernatural energy sources.
Adele wields extensive magical knowledge, specializing in creating and using colored Magic Stones with diverse effects: teleportation (blue), light swords (purple), barriers (red), incendiary explosions (violet), flight via geometric wings (green), long-distance communication (pink), recalling allies (orange), and healing (multicolored). Unlike Agnès, who uses a broomstick, Adele relies on her wings for flight. Though described as more skilled and diligent than Agnès, she lacks her sister's raw power, compensating through rigorous training and sheer willpower. She is also a proficient markswoman.
