TV-Series
Description
Kaguya, also known as Princess Kaguya or the Moon Empress, stands as the second major antagonist of the series and serves as the final villain in the original anime adaptation. Her character draws loose inspiration from the princess of the same name in the Japanese folktale The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. She is the ruler of the moon and the empress of a race of anthropomorphic rabbit people who reside there. Unlike her subjects, who appear as humanoid rabbits, Kaguya looks like a human woman. Her appearance is notable for its direct reference to the Playboy bunny, as she wears a strapless outfit with a bow tie, bunny ears, and other similar accessories. She has long black hair with a hime cut, brown eyes, and possesses a mature and powerful physique.

Having lived for over a thousand years, Kaguya is a being of immense age and power. Her primary motivation is to maintain her own youth and beauty, which she is able to do by absorbing the life essence of others. She accomplishes this through a kiss that drains the youth and energy from young women. This ability, which functions like a form of spiritual vampirism, is her most notable power and is central to her villainous scheme to steal the youth of women across the world. Her power is such that she can even grow to a colossal size, and her true form is revealed to be a monstrous, hydra-like eldritch abomination of island-like proportions, with her real face situated on her body.

Approximately one thousand years before the main story, Kaguya conquered the Earth. She was ultimately defeated by a legendary warrior or priest of the Dragon God, who severed her ears and sealed them away within the bloodline of the Dragon Priestess, a role that the heroine Sayaka Mine is destined to fill. For centuries, she remained dormant. Her awakening is triggered by Yaiba Kurogane's use of the sacred Dragon Orbs, whose energy she senses from the moon. Once revived, she launches a full-scale invasion of Earth using bamboo-styled spaceships, deploying her powerful rabbit warrior army.

In terms of personality, Kaguya is depicted as a regal, elegant, and dangerously seductive figure. She carries herself with the haughty confidence of an empress, but this is tempered by an affably evil nature. She can be flirtatious and appears to toy with her enemies, such as when she effortlessly parries an attack from the demon lord Onimaru before responding with a powerful blast of energy. Her demeanor is cool and calculated, and she is driven by immense vanity and a desire for eternal youth. She is also highly intelligent, having successfully ruled the moon and trained a powerful military force for her conquest.

Her role in the story is that of a catastrophic, world-level threat that forces a temporary shift in the series' conflict. Her power is so great that Yaiba, the protagonist, must form an uneasy and temporary alliance with his archenemy, the demon lord Onimaru, in order to stand a chance against her and her most powerful warrior, Gekko. This Enemy Mine scenario is a pivotal development in the plot, as rival swordsmen unite against a common, greater evil. Key relationships include her subordinate generals, Tsukikage, her right-hand man, and his younger brother Gekko, her most ruthless and powerful fighter. Her plan also centers on Sayaka Mine, as she needs the Dragon Priestess to break the seal on her full power.

Throughout the Kaguya arc, there is notable development in both the plot and the characters around her. The primary development is the forced collaboration between Yaiba and Onimaru, who set aside their personal vendetta to perform a combined technique known as the Wave of Wind Thunder. Kaguya herself does not undergo a redemption arc but remains a formidable force of nature. In a last-ditch effort, she can fuse with the Earth itself, becoming a planet-level threat. Her defeat requires the combined efforts of all the major warriors, marking her as an obstacle that could not be overcome by the hero alone. Her abilities are numerous, including superhuman physical characteristics, longevity, the power to fuse with and possess others (such as attempting to possess Sayaka), elemental and weather manipulation, and the aforementioned youth-draining kiss, which is her signature method of sustaining herself.
