Movie
Description
Bertolt Hoover is a tall, slender young man with short dark hair and pale green eyes, notable as the tallest among his peers in the 104th Cadet Corps. He originates from beyond the Walls, specifically the Liberio internment zone in Marley, and was selected as a Warrior candidate for the Marleyan military. During his childhood, he intervened to stop Porco Galliard from bullying Reiner Braun, an act that forged a lifelong bond between them. He was later chosen to inherit the power of the Colossal Titan, a transformation he was able to master almost immediately.

Described by others as quiet, taciturn, and weak-willed, Bertolt rarely takes initiative and tends to remain in the background. His instructor noted that he possessed great potential but an utter lack of self-confidence. By his own admission, he identifies as something of a coward with low self-esteem, someone who follows popular opinion rather than asserting his own will. This withdrawn behavior initially creates the impression that he is the least emotionally compromised of the three infiltrators, appearing to show little remorse for his actions and caring primarily about the well-being of his partner, Reiner. However, when confronted by his former comrades from the 104th Corps, he reveals himself to be far more conflicted and guilt-ridden than his distant demeanor suggests.

Despite his reserved nature, Bertolt shows great devotion to his fellow Warriors, Reiner Braun and Annie Leonhart, and is easily driven to action or anger when he feels either of them is threatened. He seems to harbor unspoken romantic feelings for Annie, a fact that Reiner teases him about. His interactions with others reveal that while his actions have caused immense suffering, he is not inherently cruel and is capable of showing genuine kindness. At the same time, he demonstrates an intense, almost pathological fear of dying himself, which stands in stark contrast to the destruction he calmly unleashes on others.

As a character, Bertolt serves as a major antagonist whose true identity illustrates the moral complexity of the conflict. Along with Reiner and Annie, he infiltrated the Walls in the year 845 on a mission from Marley to exterminate humanity within the Walls and retrieve the Founding Titan. As the Colossal Titan, he is responsible for breaching the gate of Shiganshina District, an attack that led to the fall of Wall Maria and the deaths of countless civilians, including the mother of Eren Yeager. After this attack, he forged family records, passed himself off as a refugee from a mountain village, and enlisted in the military alongside his comrades to learn about the enemy from within.

His role in the story unfolds gradually. He graduates third in his class from the 104th Cadet Corps and joins the Scout Regiment. Five years after the fall of Shiganshina, he transforms into the Colossal Titan again at Trost District, breaching its gate and repelling the cadets with the intense steam from his body. When his identity is eventually revealed alongside Reiner's, he participates in the abduction of Eren Yeager and Ymir. During the Battle of Shiganshina, his personality undergoes a serious shift, becoming detached, indifferent, and coldly resolved to fulfill his duty. He calmly declares his intent to kill his former friends, rationalizing that no one is truly at fault and that the world is simply cruel. He remains unfazed by psychological tactics and expresses disappointment when his transformation fails to eliminate all of the Scout Regiment soldiers.

Bertolt's development culminates in a pivotal moment where he begins to overcome his characteristic passivity, resolving to act independently to prevent further suffering to those he cares about. This newfound determination surprises even his allies. However, his arc ends tragically during the final battle to retake Wall Maria. After being outsmarted and pulled from his Colossal Titan by Eren and Armin, he finds himself helpless on the ground. As Armin's Pure Titan approaches to devour him, his composure completely shatters. He desperately begs his former friends to save him and screams for Reiner and Annie before being consumed, after which the power of the Colossal Titan transfers to Armin Arlert.

In terms of notable abilities, Bertolt is a highly skilled soldier who ranked third among the 104th Cadet Corps and is noted for his proficiency with vertical maneuvering equipment. His primary power is the ability to transform into the Colossal Titan, a form that stands approximately sixty meters tall, making it the largest Titan encountered up to that point. This form lacks skin, exposing its muscle tissue, and constantly emits jets of superheated steam, a trait that parallels his human habit of nervous sweating. The Colossal Titan can generate massive explosive force upon transformation, can dissolve its body almost instantly to vanish from sight, and possesses powerful regenerative capabilities that allow Bertolt to heal wounds even in his human form.
