Description
Hotaru Ichijō is a fifth-grade elementary school student who becomes one of the central figures in her small rural community after moving from Tokyo. Her relocation to the countryside is due to her father's work transfer, a change that places her in the unfamiliar setting of Asahigaoka Branch School. Born on May 28, she is ten to eleven years old during the main events of the story.
In terms of physical appearance, Hotaru is notably tall for her age, standing between 161 and 164 centimeters. This advanced physical development, combined with her neat, dark hair and calm demeanor, often leads strangers and even acquaintances to mistake her for being much older than she actually is, sometimes assuming she is a middle school student or an adult. This contrast between her youthful grade level and her mature appearance is one of her most frequently noted traits.
Hotaru's personality has two distinct sides. In public, especially at school and with her friends, she presents herself as mature, responsible, and empathetic. She is often seen as having an "older sister" type of personality, and her classmates tend to rely on her for her level-headedness. However, this composed exterior belies a more childlike nature that emerges in private. At home with her parents, she becomes notably more capricious, excitable, and prone to撒娇 (acting spoiled). Furthermore, despite her usual calm, Hotaru is easily frightened and can panic in stressful or unexpected situations, such as getting lost or facing a sudden challenge, revealing the vulnerability of her actual age.
Her primary motivation and the most defining aspect of her character is her deep and intense admiration for her senior, Komari Koshigaya. This feeling, which she herself recognizes as being akin to love, stems from an incident where she and Komari got lost while stargazing. Though both were scared, Komari bravely took charge and guided Hotaru to safety, an act that cemented Hotaru's profound respect and affection. She is captivated by Komari's petite and cute appearance, often thinking of her as a "small and adorable senior". This obsession manifests in several notable ways: Hotaru is highly skilled at sewing and fills her room with numerous handmade plush dolls of Komari. Her talents extend to cooking and even a surprising affinity for robotics, as she once used a robot kit to create a mechanized, walking version of a Komari doll. Despite the intensity of her feelings and the physical evidence of her hobby, Hotaru is shy about this fixation and works to keep it hidden, though her friends and Komari herself often remain oblivious to its true nature.
Within the story's ensemble, Hotaru serves as the newcomer whose perspective highlights the unique pace and customs of rural life. She approaches the countryside with curiosity and adapts remarkably well, showing no disgust towards insects or unfamiliar foods, and developing an interest in nature and farming. Her key relationships include her friendship with the other students: the mischievous Natsumi Koshigaya, the enigmatic younger Renge Miyauchi, and her homeroom teacher, Kazuho Miyauchi. She also owns a pet dog named Pechi. While her bonds with all the main characters are important, her relationship with Komari is the central axis of her character development. Over time, Hotaru matures and integrates more deeply into village life, navigating challenges that range from academic tasks to emotional distress when separated from Komari, all while balancing her outwardly mature persona with her genuine, heartfelt admiration for her friends. Her name, meaning "firefly" in Japanese, thematically connects to a significant moment in the series where she befriends a firefly, symbolizing her place and growth in this new environment.
