Description
Maximilian, whose full name is Maximilian Gaius Von Reginrave, is an Imperial prince and the commander-in-chief of the Empire's invasion forces in the Principality of Gallia. He is a central antagonist in the 2009 anime adaptation of Valkyria Chronicles. As a younger son of the Imperial family, his older brother holds the position of crown prince, placing Maximilian in a precarious political position; a successful military campaign could make him a threat to the throne, while failure would further diminish his standing.
In terms of background, Maximilian dedicated himself to the study of ancient history and the Valkyria, the legendary race of superhuman warriors. He traced the remaining descendants of this bloodline and eventually discovered Selvaria Bles, a Valkyria being held at an Imperial research facility. He recruited her into his service, and she became his most powerful asset. His search for the power of the Valkyria is a driving force behind his actions throughout the story.
Maximilian possesses an aloof and composed personality, rarely displaying strong emotion even in the heat of battle. He is an ambitious and charismatic leader who inspires a high level of trust and loyalty from his subordinates, particularly the three generals known as the Drei Stern: Selvaria Bles, Radi Jaegar, and Berthold Gregor. He is a gifted and sound strategist with excellent tactical insight, and his military plans often rely on overwhelming force, including super-weapons such as massive land battleships. Despite his cool exterior, he is extremely principled regarding rules of conduct and duty, and he shows no compassion for those he considers traitors or war criminals. He is also noted for his natural charisma and refined appearance, traits often associated with his royal blood.
Maximilian's motivations are rooted in ambition and a desire for power. He views the war as an opportunity to prove his own worth, secure his position within the Empire, and expand its territory. He is determined to obtain the power of the Valkyria for himself, believing it will make him invincible and allow him to reshape the world under his rule. His role in the story is that of the primary antagonist whose forces drive the conflict, placing him in direct opposition to Squad 7 and its leaders, Welkin Gunther and Alicia Melchiott.
Key relationships include his bond with Selvaria Bles, who serves him with absolute devotion; his complicated rivalry with his brother, the crown prince; and his professional command over the Drei Stern, each of whom holds him in high regard. Over the course of the anime, Maximilian's character undergoes development as his plans begin to unravel. His reliance on Selvaria's power becomes increasingly critical, and as the Gallian forces prove more resilient than anticipated, his calculated demeanor is tested. His eventual confrontation with the protagonists forces him to confront the limits of his ambitions and the cost of his pursuit of absolute power.
Notable abilities include his sharp tactical mind, his skill in commanding large-scale military operations, and his personal prowess on the battlefield. He is also a hidden playable character in Valkyria Chronicles 2, where he is classified as a Lancer-class unit. In the anime, he is depicted as a formidable opponent who can hold his own in direct combat, though he typically relies on his strategic acumen and the strength of his subordinates.
