Description
Nagisa Shiota, a student in Kunugigaoka Junior High School's Class 3-E, presents an unassuming and reserved exterior. His troubled background originates from an overbearing mother, Hiromi Shiota, who imposed her desire for a daughter onto him, resulting in his long hair, forced cross-dressing, and verbal abuse for expressing individuality. His father left due to Hiromi's behavior, leaving Nagisa isolated. Before Class 3-E, he spent two years in Class D but fell to Class E due to poor academics, forming an early friendship with Karma Akabane that drifted apart before their reunion. His friendship with Kaede Kayano began when she styled his hair into signature pigtails, replacing his ponytail.

Physically petite and androgynous, Nagisa has light blue shoulder-length hair and azure eyes, often leading to mistaken identity and teasing. His appearance stems directly from his mother's influence, though he modifies his clothing—choosing cargo pants and loose sweaters—to appear more masculine. After graduation, he cuts his hair short but retains his bangs. His standard school attire includes a white button-up shirt, dark blue vest, black tie, and grey cargo-style pants, with practical black hair ties worn on his wrists.

Nagisa's personality blends calm observation with deep-seated insecurity. Exceptionally perceptive, he compiles detailed notes on Korosensei's habits and weaknesses, yet struggles with self-worth due to maternal abuse. Initially passive and pessimistic, he evolves through Class 3-E, gaining confidence and clarity. Despite his gentle exterior, he exhibits a startling lack of fear in high-stakes situations, wielding real knives or confronting adversaries. His ability to completely suppress his bloodlust—later metaphorically depicted as a snake or flaming aura—allows undetected approaches, a skill noted by mentors Karasuma and Korosensei.

His assassination talents emerge as survival mechanisms from abuse. Though physically weaker than classmates, he excels in stealth and psychological tactics. Key abilities include Bloodlust Concealment, masking intent until attack to immobilize even trained assassins; People Reading, detecting emotional "wavelengths" to identify awareness gaps, refined by observing his mother; Combat Techniques like the Clap Stunner distraction strike and the Kiss of Death distraction kiss, the latter used to subdue Kayano during her tentacle-induced rampage; and Strategic Analysis, identifying behavioral patterns like Korosensei's post-lunch vulnerability.

Nagisa transitions from a supporting observer to a pivotal figure in Class 3-E's assassination efforts. Early attempts, like a grenade feint against Korosensei, showcase his willingness for self-sacrifice. His skills gain recognition during the "Talent Time" arc, defeating the abusive instructor Akira Takaoka by exploiting his unassuming appearance and precise timing, earning classwide respect. He contributes tactical plans, like hydraulic cages during the Assassination Island arc. His growth peaks when helping Kayano shed her tentacles, using Irina Jelavić's Kiss of Death technique to neutralize her bloodlust. In the climax, he delivers the final blow to Korosensei, overcoming emotional turmoil with calm resolve.

Nagisa's relationships highlight his empathetic yet complex nature. His bond with Karma Akabane involves mutual respect and rivalry, though Karma's initial abandonment left Nagisa feeling inadequate. Kayano remains his closest female friend, unaware of her romantic feelings. Tomohito Sugino is a straightforward confidant, while Rio Nakamura teases him about his appearance without malice. His dynamic with Korosensei is foundational, as the teacher's guidance helps him reconcile assassination talents with a desire to protect others.

Post-graduation, Nagisa rejects an assassin career, recognizing Korosensei's legacy of nurturing potential over exploiting it. He becomes a teacher at Paradise High School, handling a delinquent-filled class. His assassination skills resurface defensively, like using the Clap Stunner to subdue a threatening student, demonstrating his commitment to guiding others as Korosensei did, symbolizing his evolution from a directionless student to an educator channeling his talents for others' growth.
