Description
Detroff Kossell is a supporting character from the anime Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, specifically appearing in the picture drama The Mayfly of Space 1. He serves as the captain of the flagship Lili Marleen and acts as the second-in-command to Cima Garahau within the Cima Fleet.
Kossell was born in the Mahal colony cluster on Side 3 and is a former soldier of the Zeon Principality's Assault Task Force. Despite his large and somewhat rough appearance, which is often compared to that of a pirate, he is a highly capable and competent officer. His primary strength lies in his ability to accurately interpret Cima’s often vague or unspoken intentions, allowing him to execute her commands effectively and serve as a reliable subordinate.
His loyalty to Cima is deeply ingrained. He was the first member of the fleet to address her as "Master Cima," a form of address that was eventually adopted by the entire crew, even though Cima herself had initially requested to be called "Commander". The Mayfly of Space 1 picture drama explores the background of the Cima Fleet, including the events that left them homeless and adrift after the One Year War. In this context, Kossell’s role as her steadfast supporter is further highlighted as she reflects on her past.
Within the story of the Delaz Conflict, Kossell is responsible for commanding the fleet's flagship. In the final phase of the conflict, he follows Cima in an attempt to seize control of the battleship Gwaden. During this operation, the ship's bridge is directly attacked and destroyed by Anavel Gato’s mobile armor, the Neue Ziel. The resulting explosion and decompression hurl Kossell and his men into the vacuum of space, leading to his death. In an alternate interpretation presented in the manga Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Rebellion, Kossell survives this encounter. In that version, he commands the Lili Marleen to shield Cima’s mobile suit during the Solar System II operation and later departs for Jupiter with her.
