Hirohiko Kakegawa is a Japanese actor, voice actor, and narrator born on October 11, 1959, in Saitama Prefecture, Japan. He is a graduate of Waseda University. Before entering the entertainment industry, Kakegawa worked as a local government official and a company employee. He decided to pursue a career in voice acting to avoid future regret and enrolled in the Aonijuku training school in Tokyo, graduating as part of its sixth generation alongside notable voice actors like Takeshi Kusao and Yumi Toma. He made his debut in 1986 with a role in the television anime Saint Seiya.
Kakegawa is affiliated with the talent agency Aoni Production. Known for his calm and composed voice, he possesses a wide vocal range, allowing him to portray characters from their twenties through to middle age and beyond. In the early 1990s, he was also frequently cast in robot roles, utilizing a higher-pitched voice.
Kakegawa has built an extensive filmography across anime, video games, and dubbing. He is perhaps best known for voicing Dracule Mihawk in the long-running series One Piece, taking over the role from the late Takeshi Aono. He has also had a long-standing association with the anime Chibi Maruko-chan, providing the voice for characters like Professor Hideyuki Togawa and Shigeo Sasaki. His work extends to Japanese dubbing of foreign films, where he has provided voices for actors such as Brent Spiner in the Independence Day films and William H. Macy in Pleasantville.
