TV Special
Description
Professor Sycamore, known as Professor Platane in Japanese, is a Pokémon researcher specializing in Mega Evolution based in Lumiose City within the Kalos region. His primary research focuses on the mechanics and bonds required for Mega Evolution, centered on his own Garchomp which demonstrates the capability to Mega Evolve. He rescued this Garchomp as a Gible that bit him during their first encounter; it evolved into Gabite and then Garchomp under his care, forging a strong mutual bond.
He maintains a calm and helpful demeanor, assisting trainers and remaining determined during crises. He treated Ash Ketchum's injured Froakie, explained its history of behavioral issues with previous trainers, and later gifted Ash a Kalos Pokédex after Froakie chose Ash. He similarly provided starter Pokémon to other trainers: Fennekin to Serena, Chespin to Clemont after it expressed a desire to travel with him, and Squirtle, Bulbasaur, and Charmander to Tierno, Shauna, and Trevor respectively. His lab sustains occasional damage during conflicts, necessitating repairs, a recurring circumstance he handles without visible frustration.
His role extends to mentoring; he formerly employed Alain as his assistant. Alain's initial interest in Mega Evolution stemmed from Sycamore's research, leading him to collect Mega Stones. Sycamore supported this endeavor while requesting periodic updates on Alain's progress. During events in *Mega Evolution Special III*, Sycamore observed a televised report showing Alain battling Primal Groudon, Primal Kyogre, and Mega Rayquaza, reacting with visible shock and concern for his former assistant's safety.
Sycamore actively participates in field operations, inspecting Anistar City's sundial where he was mistakenly attacked by Carrie, an attendant of Gym Leader Olympia. He later observed Ash's Gym battle against Olympia, discussing battle tactics and inquiring about her visions related to Ash's Greninja. He also organizes events like the Pokémon Summer Camp, inviting Ash, Serena, Clemont, Bonnie, and others to participate in battles, PokéVision video creation, and rally races.
He demonstrates protectiveness, particularly toward his Garchomp and others in his care. When Team Rocket kidnapped Garchomp or stole its Mega Stone and Keystone, he pursued them relentlessly. He intervened physically when a Team Flare grunt attempted to grab his companion Mairin, rebuking the grunt before deploying Garchomp defensively. His willingness to confront danger extends to collaborations; he deduced Meyer's secret identity as the Blaziken Mask after Meyer assisted in rescuing Garchomp, later recruiting Meyer's engineering expertise for projects while keeping this secret.
He maintains professional relationships with figures like Champion Diantha, discussing Mega Evolution mechanics and observing her battles. While attempting to charm her manager, Kathi Lee, he received a lighthearted rejection via a book. His broader contributions include public education on Mega Evolution's requirements, emphasizing the necessity of a strong bond between trainer and Pokémon alongside the Keystone and Mega Stone components.
