Description
Platane is the Pokémon Professor residing in Lumiose City, Kalos, his research intensely focused on the phenomenon of Mega Evolution. He investigates how certain Pokémon achieve a transformation beyond their final evolutionary stage, specifically examining the deep bond required between trainer and Pokémon for this power to manifest.

He previously mentored Alain as his assistant, guiding his study of Mega Evolution. Their collaboration involved caring for an injured Gible Alain brought to the lab. Despite the Gible's initial fear and aggression—which led it to bite Platane—he remained patient and determined to befriend it. This Gible evolved first into Gabite and later into Garchomp under his care, forming a strong bond with Platane. This Garchomp possesses the potential to Mega Evolve.

Platane maintains professional connections with prominent figures. He communicates with Kalos Champion Diantha regarding her ability to Mega Evolve her Gardevoir. He also interacts with Hoenn Champion Steven Stone, who researches the historical origins of Mega Evolution. His connections extend to Lysandre, leading research into Mega Evolution energy and Kalos legends at Fleur-de-lis Labs. Platane becomes aware that Lysandre provided Alain with a Mega Ring and Mega Stone, observing Alain's pursuit of greater power with concern.

Platane demonstrates a calm and helpful demeanor, often aiding others. He exhibits strong determination in his research, particularly concerning Pokémon well-being and trainer bonds. He displays protectiveness when a Team Flare grunt attempted to grab his assistant Mairin; he physically intervened, admonished the grunt, and deployed his Garchomp. His dedication to his Garchomp is evident as he actively participates in rescuing it during multiple incidents, including Team Rocket's attempts to control or steal it using specialized devices.

Later, he appears alongside Mairin to support Alain during his World Coronation Series match against Leon, offering comfort to Mairin after Alain's defeat.
