TV Special
Description
Fleur-de-lis, known as Lysandre in English-language versions, is the leader of Team Flare and the owner of Lysandre Labs in the Kalos region. He makes his first appearance in the Mega Evolution Specials as a mysterious benefactor and researcher who becomes a key antagonist. He is an adult man with a tall and slender build, orange-red hair connected to a short beard, and dark eyes. His typical attire is elegant and formal, consisting of a black suit with red stripes on the sleeves and trousers, a grey fluffy collar, black fingerless gloves, and a Mega Ring worn on the middle finger of his left hand, which contains a Key Stone.
Fleur-de-lis is characterized by a disillusioned and cynical worldview. While he presents a calm and collected exterior, he holds a radical belief that the world is filled with ugliness, greed, and selfishness, which he believes must be eliminated to create a "beautiful world". He is highly manipulative and views others as tools to be used for his own ends. He shows a particular interest in Mega Evolution, which he sees as representing the pure instinct of combat that Pokémon have lost due to their relationship with humans. Despite his冷酷 (ruthless) methods, he is an idealist who is deeply convinced of the righteousness of his cause and shows no hesitation in pursuing it, even if it means mass destruction.
In the Mega Evolution specials, Fleur-de-lis's primary motivation is to research and harness the powerful energy emitted by Mega Evolution. He first encounters the trainer Alain when the latter is searching for an Ampharosite. Fleur-de-lis defeats Alain's Charmeleon in a battle and subsequently recruits him, providing him with a Key Stone and a Charizardite X. He instructs Alain to battle as many Mega Evolved Pokémon as possible to gather battle data, and orders him to keep their arrangement secret from Professor Sycamore, claiming it is to protect the professor from potential danger. His research expands to include the study of a mysterious Giant Rock, which he believes holds the key to Mega Evolution's origins, and the legendary Pokémon Zygarde.
His role in the story is that of the puppet master and hidden antagonist. He operates from the shadows for much of the narrative, using Alain as his primary agent to collect data on Mega Evolution energy. In Mega Evolution Special III, he informs Alain and Steven Stone that Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre are about to clash, a battle that could destroy the world. He tasks them with stopping the legendary Pokémon, though his true goal is to claim the source of their power, the Giant Rock, for himself. After Mega Rayquaza intervenes and resolves the conflict, Fleur-de-lis successfully secures the Giant Rock and has it transported to his laboratory in Kalos for further study.
Key relationships define Fleur-de-lis's actions. His relationship with Alain is entirely manipulative; he acts as a mentor and benefactor, giving Alain power, but ultimately uses the young trainer's desire for strength to serve his own research goals. He also maintains a close association with Malva, a member of the Kalos Elite Four, who aids his research. He shows an interest in the bond phenomenon exhibited by Ash's Greninja, seeing it as another avenue of power to exploit.
Throughout the Mega Evolution Specials, Fleur-de-lis shows little to no character development, remaining steadfast in his obsessive pursuit of power and his nihilistic vision for the world. His development occurs more fully in the subsequent main anime series, where his plans escalate and he ultimately meets his end. Notably, he possesses a Shiny Gyarados that is capable of Mega Evolution, which he uses in battle. His most trusted Pokémon is a male Pyroar, a loyal and serious Pokémon that is almost always seen by his side and has been used to battle Alain and others. He demonstrates notable abilities in strategy, manipulation, and scientific research, all of which he applies toward his goal of acquiring enough power to reshape the world according to his ideals.
