Description
Matthew cultivates a meticulously constructed public image: a lazy, cowardly freeloader squandering Princess Knight Arwin's money on drink, gambling, and brothels, earning universal contempt in Gray Neighbor. This facade masks his true purpose as Arwin's shadowy protector. Operating unseen within the city's underbelly, he eliminates threats to her safety and ambitions through violence, manipulation, and assassination, safeguarding her pristine reputation. His dedication is absolute, defined by the vow: "You hurt my owner (Ohime-sama) – so I'll kill you," and the directive: "Keep it a secret. She doesn't have to know what a pest like us is doing."

His past includes membership in a now-disbanded adventurer party. He carries deep, unresolved trauma from the mysterious death of his sister, Natalie, investigated by royal guard captain Vincent, who once tortured Matthew under suspicion. This fuels an intense aversion to religious symbols, particularly those of the Sun God cult, causing immediate withdrawal upon their sight. His motivations intertwine with Arwin's quest to restore her fallen kingdom using a legendary dungeon artifact.

Despite his feigned weakness, Matthew exhibits sporadic, unexplained surges of formidable physical strength, deployed strategically when stealth fails. His bond with Arwin transcends servitude; he serves as her vital "lifeline" or "string," a relationship of profound mutual dependence. He maintains his despised persona partly to conceal Arwin's own vulnerabilities and desires. He interacts with figures like dwarf Daz, a former party member, and Vanessa, an Adventurer’s Guild appraiser, often aiding them with underworld conflicts.

His journey involves confronting escalating dangers to Arwin and Gray Neighbor: the Sun God cult, monster stampedes, and political conspiracies. He undertakes perilous missions, such as diving into the "Thousand-Year White Nights" labyrinth to rescue Arwin during a stampede. Natalie's unexpected reappearance forces a direct confrontation with his past. Throughout these trials, he consistently prioritizes Arwin’s safety and goals, embracing his role within the city’s corruption while gradually revealing deeper layers of loyalty and trauma forged by loss and violence.
