Description
Koma-san is a komainu Yo-kai who guarded a rural shrine for centuries until its demolition forced his relocation to the city. His ivory fur features light blue accents on his stomach, tail, and inner ears. Long blue fiery eyebrows like hitodama flames frame lime-green eyes, while red swirls adorn his cheeks and hips. He carries a green furoshiki cloth and wears a green sling pouch gifted by his younger brother Komajiro for storing items.
Curious yet naive, Koma-san often speaks with rural dialects, exclaiming "Oh my swirls!" when surprised. Adapting to urban life highlights his country bumpkin traits, including fascination with modern conveniences like soft-serve ice cream and occasional misunderstandings of city norms. Though initially timid, he demonstrates loyalty and protective instincts, especially toward Komajiro, whom he mentors while secretly envying his brother's quicker adaptation. They collaborate on activities like delivering presents as Santas, operating a taxi service, and forming an expedition team.
His abilities include fire manipulation and summoning hitodama flames for combat. He uses a leaf to transform into a human disguise resembling a teenage male. While rarely seeking direct confrontation, he participates in significant battles, such as fighting Dame Dedtime's forces in the film using his Spirit Dance Soultimate move.
Beyond family, Koma-san befriends humans like Nate Adams and Whisper after they assist him in the city. A notable storyline involves his unrequited affection for a manga artist; disguised as human to aid her, he inspires her comic creations despite her publisher's initial rejection of Yo-kai themes. This deepens his appreciation for human connections, though he laments her exaggerated portrayal of him as ferocious.
Across various media, Koma-san evolves into forms like Komane or Komasan S under specific conditions and participates in quests to unlock other Yo-kai. Spin-offs depict him in alternate roles, such as a commander in Sangokushi or a taxi driver in anime segments. His mother, Koma Kaachan, appears in later media, revealing a new younger brother named Komasaburo during a family visit.
Throughout his journey, Koma-san balances rustic heritage with newfound urban experiences, maintaining his core traits of curiosity, kindness, and occasional comical misjudgments while continuously seeking soft-serve ice cream.
