Description
Akihito Kanbara is a half-human, half-youmu hybrid with immortality and rapid regenerative healing that recovers nearly any injury. His unique physiology originates from human mother Yayoi Kanbara and an unidentified powerful youmu father. A childhood car accident exposed his regenerative powers, causing social isolation. Later, an incident with Miroku Fujima inflicted severe injuries that triggered his youmu transformation, nearly killing Hiroomi Nase and prompting the Nase family's ongoing surveillance to prevent future rampages.
He displays a playful, friendly demeanor laced with sarcasm and a defining obsession with glasses, self-identifying as a "meganest." This fixation first attracts him to Mirai Kuriyama when he stops her from jumping off their school roof. After saving her, Mirai repeatedly attacks him with her blood sword, leveraging his immortality for combat training. Despite her aggression, he empathizes with her outcast status due to cursed blood abilities, helping her gain confidence against youmu. Their bond forms through shared experiences of isolation.
His youmu half, "Beyond the Boundary," emerges as a feral, destructive entity during life-threatening injuries, marked by physical changes: black eyes with multicolored irises, green-highlighted blonde hair, and green energy emissions. During the Calm—a phenomenon weakening youmu—Izumi Nase's glaciate barrier attack triggers a rampage endangering others. Tasked with eliminating the threat, Mirai defeats the transformed Akihito and absorbs Beyond the Boundary into herself, plunging him into a three-month coma.
Awakening, he discovers Beyond the Boundary still battling Mirai in a pocket dimension. Using a spirit stone, he enters this space, mastering his hybrid abilities to aid her in defeating the entity. Witnessing Mirai sacrifice herself by expending all her blood to destroy the youmu—after confessing love—he keeps her ring as a memento. Her subsequent reappearance, now amnesiac, leads him to conceal their past to protect her chance at a normal life while supporting her emotionally. When she regains memories and is consumed by darkness, he confronts her despair, reaffirms his love, and accepts her without glasses, cementing their romance.
His abilities surpass regeneration: transformation grants immense strength, earth manipulation, pyrokinesis, and electrical attacks. Post-coma, he resists spirit warrior seals and barriers. These powers evolve across media, notably during the pocket dimension battle where he weaponizes his youmu side offensively.
Relationships shape his development. With Mirai, interactions evolve from antagonism to mutual reliance and romance. His connection with Hiroomi and Mitsuki Nase mixes friendship with their monitoring duty; Hiroomi's teasing and antics like warming hands in Akihito's armpits highlight their complex dynamic. Initially wary of Izumi Nase for her role in his near-death, he acknowledges her responsibilities. His mother Yayoi, an eccentric spirit warrior, maintains sporadic contact, reflecting their strained yet caring bond.
