ONA
Description
Mahiro Yasaka is the central human protagonist of the series. He is a high school student with a fairly ordinary appearance, characterized by his medium-length brown hair and gray-bluish eyes. Standing at approximately 170 centimeters tall, he has a slender build that is typical for a boy his age. His life takes an unexpected turn when he becomes the target of various alien creatures, forcing him into a world filled with extraterrestrial beings inspired by the Cthulhu Mythos, though these entities are portrayed without their traditional horror elements.
Mahiro possesses a personality that is distinctly rational, peace-loving, and grounded, which makes him arguably the most normal character in the series. He has a strong preference for a quiet, ordinary life and becomes easily exasperated by the chaotic and absurd situations that the aliens around him create. Despite his general kindness and willingness to help strangers, he has a notable breaking point, which is most easily reached by the relentless antics of the alien girl Nyaruko. When sufficiently provoked, particularly by inappropriate or irritating behavior from aliens, he reacts with sudden and extreme violence, usually by stabbing or throwing a metal fork at the offender. This violent reaction is played for comedic effect and is notable for its incredible speed, as no alien in the series has ever been able to dodge his fork attacks.
His initial motivation is primarily to protect his peaceful life and return things to normal. At first, he dislikes the aliens who intrude upon his home and actively tries to expel them. However, as the story progresses, he becomes more tolerant of their presence, allowing them to live with him out of a sense of resignation and, eventually, reluctant acceptance. A significant reason for the unwanted attention he receives is a unique trait of his being strangely attractive to aliens, which explains why he was targeted for kidnapping by alien criminals and why Nyaruko fell in love with him at first sight.
His role in the story is that of the unwilling straight man, providing a rational counterbalance to the surreal and comedic chaos caused by the cosmic beings who reside in his household and attend his school. While he is not the primary fighter, he is the narrative anchor who grounds the story in a semblance of reality. His key relationships are all with the aliens who come to live with him. His most significant and complex relationship is with Nyaruko, a formless deity who is assigned to protect him. Their dynamic is defined by her aggressive, amorous advances and his annoyance and physical reprisals, though he harbors an underlying attraction to her human form. He also has a notable relationship with Kuuko, a Cthughan alien who is initially an enemy due to her obsession with Nyaruko. Over time, they put aside their differences to the point of cooperating, such as faking an engagement to deal with Kuuko's family. Another key figure is Hasuta, a Hasturan alien who is androgynous and develops a romantic affection for Mahiro, who in turn shows him kindness and protection.
Throughout the series, Mahiro demonstrates considerable character development. He begins as a boy who despises and fears aliens, but his tolerance and understanding gradually grow. He transitions from an active desire to expel them to a guarded acceptance of their coexistence in his life. His romantic development is a central arc, moving from annoyance at Nyaruko's advances to processing her sincere feelings and eventually reciprocating them. This culminates in several significant moments, including an on-screen kiss in the final OVA, which signals his full acceptance of their relationship. Key events that facilitate his development include a body-swapping incident with Nyaruko that forces mutual understanding, and his mother’s kidnapping, which challenges his desire for a normal life and pushes him into more active participation in resolving extraterrestrial threats.
Mahiro notably lacks any standard offensive superpowers. Instead, his primary and most effective ability is his uncanny proficiency with a fork as a weapon. This is not a random skill but an inherited trait from his mother, Yoriko Yasaka, who is a seasoned monster hunter from a lineage known as the Deity Hunter. His throws are impossibly fast and accurate, consistently hitting any alien target regardless of their own superhuman speed. Beyond this physical prowess, Mahiro exhibits other unique attributes, including a perceptiveness toward space-time anomalies and a natural resilience against reality-altering effects, which becomes a pivotal skill in later story arcs.
