Description
Ayaka Shindō appears human in the original light novels but manifests as a nine-tailed fox youmu in the anime. She serves as a Spirit World Warrior and an appraiser for youmu stones, operating a photography studio that doubles as a café for ordinary humans. Her residence in Nagatsuki City functions as both her appraisal office and home, shared with her younger sister, Ai Shindō, a cat youmu high school student who handles household duties.

Ayaka maintains a calm, level-headed, and mysterious demeanor. She possesses a sharp, sometimes cruel sense of humor, exemplified by publicly sharing embarrassing messages from the "big-busted" and "kind of crazy" Yayoi Kanbara. Despite this teasing nature, she shows genuine concern during crises, especially for Ai, reassuring her during attacks on their home. Ayaka acts as a crucial link between Akihito Kanbara and the Spirit World Warriors, relaying postcards from his mother.

Her abilities include constructing potent barriers: one wards off ordinary humans to restrict access solely to Spirit World Warriors, while another forms a dome capable of annihilating multiple youmu. In her nine-tailed fox form, she projects energy blasts from her mouth and erects protective shields. She displays significant power even during the Calm when other youmu weaken, defending Ai and weakened youmu against Miroku Fujima. Later, absorbed into the massive youmu Beyond the Boundary, she survives by aiding Akihito and Mirai Kuriyama against hostile entities within it.

In the sequel film *I’ll Be Here – Future*, Ayaka confronts Izumi Nase, possessed by a parasitic youmu. During this battle, Ayaka sustains severe injuries and is thrown into a building while in her youmu form, ultimately surviving. She also appears in the spin-off ONA *Idol Trial* as a presiding judge in a super-deformed style, adopting a sharper, more critical persona within an idol-themed courtroom setting.

Ayaka has collaborated with Nagatsuki City's Spirit World Warriors for at least three years despite her youmu nature. She appraises youmu stones submitted by warriors like Mirai, warmly accepting Mirai as Akihito’s friend while maintaining impartiality in her assessments. Her name etymology reflects "color" and "flower" (Ayaka) and "new temple" (Shindō).
