Briareos is a full-conversion cyborg central to the conflict within Olympus. Originally Mediterranean, he was exploited by the KGB as a child terrorist before assassinating his commander and fleeing to the former United States for asylum, becoming internationally wanted. He later joined a Special Security Forces agent, partnering with the agent's daughter, Deunan Knute; they trained together and formed a romantic bond. An explosion nearly destroyed his human body at age 31, requiring extensive cybernetic reconstruction. Only a quarter of his original biology remains, primarily his cardiovascular and digestive systems, though he lost reproductive capacity. His cybernetic body, the Hecatonchires system named after hundred-armed Greek giants, allows independent control of multiple limbs or external units without cognitive overload, such as piloting a Landmate while operating its weapons and his own arm-mounted systems simultaneously. It features eight optical sensors: four on his face (including a central nasal sensor), two at the base of his head-mounted antennae, and two at the antennae tips providing peripheral vision. His original brain resides in his chest cavity, augmented by an auxiliary biocomputer in his skull for conceptual data processing. Synthetic skin covers his frame, offering tactile sensation and temperature regulation. Despite his mechanical form, he retains human vulnerabilities to injury, illness, and aging, requiring repairs after heavy combat damage. In Olympus, Briareos serves as an E-SWAT operative with Deunan, combating threats like the Human Liberation Front and the terrorist Argonauts. His duties involve protecting the Ark Project, a bioroid-led human preservation initiative, amidst political and racial tensions between humans, bioroids, and cyborgs. His adaptable combat style prioritizes on-the-fly decisions over protocol. His deep loyalty to Deunan endures, though narrative elements in certain adaptations depict friction, such as Deunan questioning his emotional perception or Briareos expressing protective concerns during missions. The Hecatonchires system's capabilities—360-degree awareness, multi-weapon targeting, and hacking resistance—make him vital to E-SWAT.
