Description
Nagafuji Taeko is a high school student, first appearing in Chapter 2 during a bookstore encounter where she befriended Shimamura Hougetsu. Her lifelong friendship with Hino Akira began in kindergarten, and they have been classmates since elementary school. Her family runs a butcher shop; she helps there occasionally but feels her contributions are minimal.
She possesses wavy purple hair reaching her shoulders, dark blue eyes, and distinctive red-framed glasses. Though matching Shimamura's height, her more noticeable figure draws unwanted attention, particularly from boys, causing her discomfort.
Taeko exhibits a markedly laid-back and absent-minded personality, often seeming lost in her own world. She struggles with social cues, interpreting jokes, and recognizing annoyance, as seen when she became easily distracted while Christmas shopping with Shimamura. Despite these social difficulties, she maintains solid academic grades. Her behavior, analyzed in Volume 2, suggests traits like strong academics contrasting with social struggles, literal language interpretation, and intensely focused interests. She adheres to inflexible routines, such as insisting December 25th is "curry day" for her family's Christmas meal due to her annual chicken curry request. Her specific fixations include boomerangs and food topics, which guide her gift suggestions.
Within the narrative, she assists Shimamura in choosing a Christmas present for Adachi, recommending a boomerang. She later helps Adachi learn to use this same boomerang in Volume 7, seemingly unaware or choosing not to mention it matches her earlier recommendation. Her relationship with Hino features moments of physical intimacy, including kissing Hino's forehead and shared baths. In one instance, she comforted Hino about family neglect by allowing breast contact. Their dynamic includes mutual teasing about forgetfulness and differing household preferences—Taeko frequently stays at Hino's residence, while Hino prefers Taeko's home.
Her name "Nagafuji" combines "eternal" (永) and "wisteria" (藤), while "Taeko" incorporates meanings like "exquisite," "strange," or "mystery" (妙) with "child" (子). This contrasts with her perceived ditzy nature despite her academic capabilities. A childhood school report noted she "only looks responsible," highlighting the disparity between her appearance and actual behavior. She cannot ride a bicycle and relies on Hino for transportation.
