Description
Fate Testarossa is a central character introduced as a rival to the protagonist, Nanoha Takamachi, before becoming her closest friend and partner. In the events of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's, Fate is nine years old and has officially become a temporary mage affiliated with the Time-Space Administration Bureau, working alongside Nanoha to resolve the Book of Darkness incident. Her full name later becomes Fate Testarossa Harlaown following her adoption by Bureau officer Lindy Harlaown.

Born as an artificial mage, Fate is the clone of Alicia Testarossa, the deceased biological daughter of the scientist Precia Testarossa. She was created through Project FATE, an experimental endeavor intended to resurrect the lost child. However, Precia considered Fate an imperfect failure due to minor differences from Alicia, and subjected her to severe physical and emotional abuse rather than genuine maternal affection. Fate was raised primarily by her creator's familiar, Linith, who served as her magic teacher and crafted her Intelligent Device, Bardiche. She also befriended a young wolf creature named Alf, who became her familiar and constant companion. Driven by a desperate longing for her mother's love, Fate obediently collected dangerous Lost Logia known as Jewel Seeds, unaware that Precia only valued her as a tool for a delusional quest to reach the mythical world of Al Hazard and resurrect Alicia.

Despite her cold and intimidating exterior when first encountered, Fate possesses a kind and gentle heart. Her loneliness stems from a lifetime of emotional neglect, and she initially struggles to understand friendship or compassion. Her personality is reserved, quiet, and deeply earnest. She rarely complains about her circumstances and follows orders with a sense of grim duty, believing that fulfilling her mother's demands will eventually earn her the affection she craves. This blinds her to the reality of her situation, and she rejects Nanoha's early attempts at friendship, considering herself unworthy of such pure-hearted kindness. Nanoha herself notes that Fate has beautiful, kind eyes that nonetheless look incredibly sad.

Fate's primary motivation throughout the first series is to win her mother's love and approval, a goal that remains central even as she begins to doubt Precia's intentions. This motivation compels her to push herself to dangerous limits in battle. After learning the truth of her origins as a clone and witnessing Precia choose to perish with Alicia's preserved body rather than accept her, this motivation transforms into a search for her own identity and purpose. At the end of the first season, she accepts Nanoha as her first true friend and is taken into protective custody by the Bureau, awaiting trial for her coerced actions. By the time of Nanoha A's, her motivation has shifted toward protecting others and atoning for her past, leading her to formally join the Bureau's efforts to stop the Wolkenritter.

In the story of A's, Fate arrives on Earth just in time to save Nanoha from a critical injury. The two are reunited as allies, with Fate serving as a temporary Bureau mage aboard the Arthra. She struggles to adapt to normal civilian life on Earth, attending school for the first time as a transfer student in Nanoha's class, though her lack of proficiency with written Japanese creates academic difficulties. Her role in the conflict is vital, as she and Nanoha confront the four Wolkenritter knights who are collecting magical pages to complete the Book of Darkness for their master, Hayate Yagami. Early in the season, Bardiche is severely damaged in battle with Signum, one of the knights, but is subsequently upgraded to Bardiche Assault, gaining a powerful cartridge system that allows it to match the knights' ancient Belkan devices.

Fate shares several key relationships that define her character. Her bond with Nanoha Takamachi is the most significant, evolving from bitter rivalry to an unbreakable partnership. Nanoha's persistent empathy and refusal to give up on her allow Fate to open her heart for the first time. The two become each other's most trusted confidantes and battle partners. Her relationship with Alf, her familiar, is that of a found family; Alf acts as a protective older sister who constantly worries about Fate's well-being and is the only one who consistently challenges Precia's cruelty on Fate's behalf. Signum, the leader of the Wolkenritter, becomes a rival and later a respected colleague; their clashes are marked by mutual acknowledgment of each other's strength and skill. Lindy Harlaown, the captain of the Arthra, serves as a new maternal figure, offering the warmth and acceptance that Precia never did, and Fate eventually accepts adoption into the Harlaown family. Precia Testarossa remains a deeply complicated figure, as Fate continues to remember the kind mother from her implanted memories even after learning the truth, harboring no resentment and expressing a wish to see her again despite everything.

Throughout A's, Fate undergoes significant development. Initially still carrying the emotional scars of her mother's betrayal, she gradually becomes more expressive and confident. Her defining moment occurs when the Book of Darkness traps her in a dream world where she lives happily with a loving Precia and a living Alicia. She is offered everything she ever wanted, yet she chooses to reject this perfect illusion and return to reality because her true friends need her. This act represents her final acceptance of her own identity as separate from Alicia and her decision to live for the future rather than be ruled by the past. By the conclusion of the incident, she has fully integrated into the Bureau and begun her path toward becoming an Enforcer, an elite officer.

As a mage, Fate is exceptionally powerful, holding an S+ rank in aerial combat by the time of later events, though her abilities are often subject to limiters when serving in specific units. She utilizes the Midchilda magical system and her magical color is gold. Her combat style is defined by extreme speed and agility, contrasting with Nanoha's focus on overwhelming bombardment and defense. Fate is a high-speed melee fighter who excels at closing distances rapidly and delivering devastating close-range strikes before evading counterattacks. This focus on speed comes at the cost of defensive durability, making her a classic fragile speedster archetype. Her magic possesses lightning attributes due to her natural mana conversion abilities, and most of her attacks carry electrical properties.

Fate wields Bardiche, her Intelligent Device, which speaks English and refers to her as sir. Bardiche can transform into multiple configurations suitable for different combat situations. The default Assault Form is an axe-like polearm. The Haken Form transforms the weapon into a scythe for more aggressive close-quarters combat. The Zanber Form generates an enormous blade of magical energy resembling a greatsword for maximum single-strike power. Later upgrades introduce the Riot Blade, a compressed one-handed sword version of the Zanber. Among her signature spells are Photon Lancer, a projectile that fires spear-like magical shots; Arc Saber, a boomerang-like cutting blade; Thunder Smasher, a long-range lightning bombardment; and Lightning Bind, a trap-based capture spell. Her high-speed movement techniques include Blitz Action for short dashes and Sonic Move for rapid bursts of speed that appear as teleportation.

In her later career as an Executive Officer of the Bureau, Fate is known as the Ace of the Navy. She takes particular interest in cases involving children who share her background as artificial mages, becoming the guardian and adoptive parent of Erio Mondial and Caro Ru Lushe. Together with Nanoha, she also co-parents Vivio Takamachi. Her arc from an abused, emotionally isolated child to a powerful, compassionate leader and protector defines much of the thematic core of the series.
