Description
Maki Oze is a member of Company 8 of the Tokyo Special Fire Force, serving as a second-class fire soldier. She was born on November 22 and is in her early twenties, with a tall, athletic build, long dark hair usually tied back, and a stern, mature expression. Her civilian attire often consists of casual, loose-fitting clothes, while her fire soldier uniform is standard issue, though she is frequently seen in physical training gear due to her combat style.

Maki comes from a military family and originally served in the Self-Defense Forces before being recruited into the Fire Force. This background gives her a highly disciplined, no-nonsense attitude, but she is far from cold. She is warm, protective, and deeply caring toward her colleagues, especially younger members like Tamaki Kotatsu and Shinra Kusakabe. Maki often acts as a big sister figure within Company 8, offering encouragement and practical advice while also being one of the first to step into danger. Despite her serious demeanor on duty, she has a softer, more playful side that emerges during downtime, and she is known to be a poor cook, much to her own embarrassment.

Her primary motivation is to protect people from the threat of Infernals—humans transformed into flaming demons—and to uncover the truth behind spontaneous human combustion. Unlike some fire soldiers driven by revenge or glory, Maki fights out of a genuine sense of duty and compassion. She also seeks to honor her family’s legacy of service while forging her own path as a fire soldier, not just a soldier.

In the story, Maki serves as one of the key frontline fighters of Company 8. She provides powerful firepower and close-quarters support during missions, often acting as a stabilizer for more volatile teammates. Her role becomes especially significant during large-scale operations, such as the assault on the Netherworld and the battles against the Knights of the Holy Sol. She is consistently depicted as reliable, resourceful, and steady under pressure.

Maki’s key relationships include a close friendship with Iris, the nun of Company 8, and a respectful camaraderie with Captain Akitaru Obi, whose leadership she trusts completely. She has a protective bond with Tamaki Kotatsu, often watching over her during missions. With Shinra, she shares a mutual respect, and she occasionally teases him gently. Her relationship with Takehisa Hinawa, the company’s lieutenant, is professional but warm; both are veteran fighters who understand each other’s competence. She also holds deep respect for the engineer Viktor Licht, though his eccentric methods occasionally try her patience.

Over the course of the series, Maki shows noticeable development in her confidence and acceptance of her own role. Early on, she struggles with the loss of her former unit and the weight of military expectations, but as Company 8 grows closer and faces greater threats, she fully embraces her identity as a fire soldier. She learns to balance her disciplined past with the more unconventional, family-like nature of Company 8, allowing herself to express emotion and vulnerability more freely.

Maki’s notable abilities center on her Second Generation fire soldier powers, which allow her to manipulate existing flames rather than generate them. She has exceptional control over fire, capable of shaping it into barriers, projectiles, or enhancing her physical strikes. Her military training complements this power, making her a skilled hand-to-hand combatant and tactical thinker. She often wraps flames around her arms and legs to increase the force of her kicks and punches. While not a Third Generation pyrokinetic able to generate fire internally, her precision and experience make her one of the most effective combatants in Company 8. She also possesses strong physical endurance and situational awareness, honed during her time in the armed forces.
