Description
Mishou Mai serves as a central character in the anime, beginning as a 13-year-old middle school student who later turns 14. She returns to her hometown at the series start, reuniting with Hyuuga Saki, whom she briefly met five years prior beneath the Sky Tree. During this reunion, nature spirits Flappy and Choppy descend, granting Mai and Saki the power to transform into legendary Pretty Cure warriors. Mai specifically becomes Cure Egret, wielding bird and sky powers, and later Cure Windy, commanding wind powers, with Choppy as her primary transformation partner.
In her civilian life, Mai exhibits a calm, observant demeanor and strong academic focus, contrasting with Saki's athleticism. Excelling in art and science, her interests are influenced by her family: her father is an astronomer, her mother an archaeologist, and her brother aspires to be an astronaut; they reside in an observatory. Mai frequently sketches happy events and surroundings in her notebook, joins the school Art Club, and designs the monument for the school festival. Her appearance features long dark purple hair often styled in a small bun, purple eyes, and typically modest clothing such as frilly tops, jeans, or seasonal dresses.
Transforming into Cure Egret brightens Mai's hair to light purple, styled in a ponytail. Her costume is primarily cream and white with teal accents, adorned with featherlike frills, a heart-shaped chest bow, and winged boot cuffs. She introduces herself as "The sparkling silver wing, Cure Egret!" and specializes in high-agility aerial combat. As Cure Windy, her outfit shifts to light blue and pale lavender with translucent sleeves and wind-themed elements. Her introduction is "The scented wind across the Earth, Cure Windy!", focusing on ground-based wind attacks. Both transformations utilize the Mix Commune device, later upgraded to the Splash Commune with spirits Moop and Foop.
Midway through the series, Mai gains the ability to switch between her Cure Egret and Cure Windy forms. Her attacks include collaborative techniques like Twin Stream Splash (with Cure Bloom) and Spiral Heart Splash (using Spiral Rings). In the finale, she and Saki defeat the primary antagonist Goyan using Spiral Heart Splash Star, aided by reformed antagonists Michiru and Kaoru temporarily borrowing Cure Windy's power.
Years later as an adult, Mai works as a graphic designer at a major advertising agency. She reconnects with Saki and navigates personal challenges, including ending a long-term relationship. When Shadows threaten their town, she and Saki regain their Pretty Cure abilities to protect others. During this conflict, Mai provides emotional support to Saki and helps uncover Michiru and Kaoru's secret identities as warriors called Dark Night Light.
Mai shares a profound bond with Saki, rooted in their childhood encounter and strengthened by their Pretty Cure partnership. She maintains a close link to her fairy partner Choppy, who offers emotional support. Her name, Mishou Mai, combines "美" (beauty/beautiful) and "翔" (soar/fly), with "舞" (Mai) meaning "dance," collectively symbolizing "beautiful flying dance"—reflecting her sky and wind-based powers. In the film "Tic-Tac Crisis," Mai and Saki resolve a disagreement while thwarting a villain's plan to freeze time by halting the Eternal Clock.
