Description
Baku Ōmori is a sixth-year student at Aibo Academy and a childhood friend of both Gao Mikado and Kuguru Uki. He serves as the primary deck builder and strategic backbone for Team Balle du Soleil, meticulously constructing and refining decks to suit the individual playstyles and preferences of his teammates. His philosophy centers on the belief that an effective deck must integrate a fighter's personal identity and strengths, a principle that guides all his work.
Personality-wise, Baku is generally friendly, easygoing, and selfless, yet he also possesses a quick temper that often fuels comedic banter, particularly with Gao. Despite their fiery clashes, an unshakeable mutual trust underpins their friendship. A defining and recurring trait is his intense, constant hunger. Without regular snacks, his mental sharpness and cognitive functions diminish dramatically, sometimes leading to comedic fainting spells that his friends have learned to manage, often by force-feeding him. His passion for mechanics also manifests in a habit of obsessively dismantling gadgets out of pure curiosity, and he carries his cards in a distinctive toolbox-style case.
Baku's motivation and role in the story are deeply tied to his past with his former mentor and cousin, Retsu Omori, who later becomes the antagonist Gremlin. Baku initially idolized Retsu, who taught him to build his first deck. However, their relationship shattered when Retsu joined the organization Disaster and adopted a philosophy that decks should be used to dominate and control fighters. Rejecting this ideology, Baku made it his personal mission to prove his mentor wrong, championing deck designs that resonate with a user's soul rather than suppress it. This ideological war reaches its peak when Gremlin attempts to recruit Baku and uses psychological manipulation during Gao’s duels. In a pivotal moment, Baku overcomes Gremlin's taunts by deciphering a hidden clue within them, allowing him to devise the winning strategy for Gao against Tasuku Ryuenji.
In terms of key relationships, his bond with Gao is central, with Baku acting as the strategist who resolves early disagreements by reconstructing Gao’s deck to fix vulnerabilities. His relationship with Kuguru is marked by subtle romantic tension; both consistently deny their feelings, yet they exhibit flustered embarrassment when their Dungeon World monster avatars perform a Link Attack while holding hands. Kuguru also shows visible concern during Baku’s hunger-induced collapses and embraces him warmly after major victories.
Throughout the series, Baku's development showcases his growth from a talented builder into a master strategist who can counter even his former teacher’s tactics. His notable abilities include forging powerful new decks, such as the Explosive Fang Dragon arsenal and evolutionary forms for Drum Bunker Dragon. His technical expertise proves instrumental in team victories, whether by making crucial mid-match adjustments to Gao’s setup or cracking cryptic clues to neutralize powerful threats like Distortion Punisher!!. While his documented individual buddyfight record includes losses to Kuguru and Tetsuya Kurodake, his true strength lies in enabling his team's success, cementing his role as the unwavering strategic anchor of Team Balle du Soleil.
