Description
Magoroku Shido is a central antagonist in the Future Card Buddyfight anime and a ninth-grade student at Aibo Academy, where he holds the position of middle school student council president and boasts some of the school's highest academic test scores. He is a member of the organization Disaster, though he initially conceals this allegiance. His core gadget, originally a red star, is later replaced with a black Dark Core bearing the same design after his affiliation with Disaster is revealed.
Shido presents a calm and collected exterior, but his personality is defined by a deep-seated arrogance and a nasty, condescending demeanor, particularly towards younger or less experienced Buddyfighters. He habitually dismisses the victories of opponents as pure luck and exhibits a compulsive need to feel superior and in control at all times. This overconfidence often leads him to underestimate his rivals and declare victory before a fight has even begun, blinding him to their strategies and setting the stage for his own defeat. When these defeats occur, he consistently refuses to accept responsibility, instead blaming his failures on others, such as his deck-builder Gremlin, or making excuses. Despite his outward arrogance, his pride is fragile, and he is easily intimidated by powerful figures. This vulnerability is starkly illustrated when he breaks down in tears after being forced to confess a tournament loss to his father. His loyalty to his superior in Disaster, Ikazuchi, is particularly unhealthy; he continues to serve Ikazuchi faithfully despite suffering repeated physical abuse and even threats of being eaten.
Throughout the series, Shido uses multiple decks and buddy monsters, often as a façade to hide his true fighting style. He initially showcases a Danger World deck with Bluechase Dragon, Garg as his buddy, and later an Ancient World deck partnered with Silver Dragon, Adelaide. However, his true original deck is from the Darkness Dragon World, with Death Ruler, Gallows as his genuine buddy monster. This authentic deck focuses on a "Shadow Dive" strategy, allowing him to bypass an opponent's center monster and attack the fighter directly, as well as using cards like Nightmare Despair to turn an opponent's own monster against them. His strategies often involve trying to stack the odds in his favor before a fight through underhanded means, such as sabotage or even kidnapping.
In the second season, Shido undergoes a significant transformation and adopts the identity of Death Shido after fusing with Gallows, donning a skull-helmeted suit of purple armor and a red cape. This form later evolves into Des Shido, characterized by red armor and smaller horns. In this role, he hunts entities known as Tenbu using an ability called Hundred Demons Calling, which allows him to summon spectral beings by chanting the incantation, "Awaken! Power of Darkness! Power of Evil!! Power of the Hundred Demons!!!". This ability summons a purple seal with the kanji for "Demon," from which he calls forth a Hundred Demon to perform tasks for him. During this period, he abandons his personal deck to utilize various "Hundred Demons" decks aligned with different worlds, though he eventually returns to his enhanced Darkness Dragon World deck for his final battle of the season. By the fourth season, he is shown using a "Marionette Death" deck.
Key relationships in Shido's life are often negative and define his role in the story. His bond with Gallows is based on an instrumental use of power rather than a true partnership. His relationship with his father, Sueroku Shido, is a source of pressure and shame, with his fear of failure in his father's eyes contributing to his fragile ego. His role in the narrative is consistently that of a foil to the protagonists, against whom he suffers numerous defeats; his sanctioned Buddyfight record includes losses to fighters like Gao Mikado, Genma Todoroki, Tetsuya Kurodake, and Noboru Kodo, with only a few notable victories, such as against Akaoni Konmae and Gratos during the Hundred Demons arc. This cycle of defeat, driven by his chronic overconfidence and strategic miscalculations, cements his status as a recurring obstacle who is ultimately his own worst enemy.
