Description
Satoshi's Mijumaru, known as Ash's Oshawott in English-language media, is a Water-type Pokémon Ash Ketchum acquired in the Unova region. Initially encountered at Professor Juniper's laboratory, it attached itself to Ash after being overlooked by another trainer, Trip, persistently following him until Ash officially obtained it and its Poké Ball.
This Oshawott displays a strong independent streak, frequently emerging from its Poké Ball on its own initiative, regardless of battle situations or commands, a habit established during its capture that continued throughout Ash's journey. It carries a pale yellow seashell, a scalchop, on its belly, using it defensively to block attacks and offensively as a slashing blade. Biologically, Oshawott can regrow a damaged or lost scalchop from its navel and maintains the shell using riverbed stones like a whetstone.
In battle, Oshawott shows determination despite early struggles with techniques. Its known moves include Water Gun, Tackle, Razor Shell, Aqua Jet, and Hydro Pump. Mastering Aqua Jet proved difficult initially; closing its eyes underwater caused poor accuracy. This changed during a critical encounter defending against a school of Tympole, forcing it to keep its eyes open and significantly improving its targeting, a skill crucial later against a wild Palpitoad. Victories include defeating Trip's Timburr with Razor Shell and Clay's Krokorok using Aqua Jet and Razor Shell combined. Losses include battles against Lenora's Watchog, Chili's Pansear (despite a type advantage), and Clay's Palpitoad.
Personality-wise, Oshawott developed a rivalry with Dawn's Piplup, primarily competing for the affection of the Mythical Pokémon Meloetta. Their frequent arguments eventually transformed into mutual friendship following Meloetta's departure. Oshawott also competed in the Scallsword King Playoffs tournament on Hotachi Island, defeating a Dewott in the finals to claim the title. However, it voluntarily relinquished the title after its scallsword broke, allowing the Dewott to become king.
Within "Kyurem VS. The Sword of Justice," Oshawott appears during a train journey with Ash, Iris, and Cilan. It joins Pikachu, Axew, and Scraggy in playful activities inside the train car. When Ash trips over Scraggy, sending Darumaka lunch boxes flying, Oshawott actively participates alongside the other Pokémon in catching the scattered food items.
