Description
Fay, born Yuui in Valeria Country, shared an identical twin brother named Fai. Both were deemed cursed bringers of misfortune to the kingdom. After their parents died, the king imprisoned the twins separately in a timeless tower. Fei Wong Reed offered freedom to one twin; Fai sacrificed himself so Yuui could live. Fei Wong altered Yuui's memories to make him believe he chose his own survival over his brother's, binding him under two curses: one forcing him to kill powerful magicians, another causing worlds to collapse around him. Ashura-ō, king of Celes Country, discovered Yuui and adopted him. Yuui took his brother's name "Fai" and received the surname "Fluorite" from Ashura, becoming Fai D. Fluorite. Ashura suppressed Fai's escalating magic with a phoenix tattoo and forbade him from using magic without it. To evade a prophecy demanding he kill Ashura, Fai sealed the king in suspended animation and fled Celes.
Fai joined Syaoran's dimension-traveling group, masquerading as a cheerful, carefree magician to hide profound emotional scars and self-loathing. He kept emotional distance yet formed bonds, especially with Syaoran and Sakura. He repeatedly broke his vow against magic to protect them, creating shields in Lecourt Country and attempting to reseal Clone Syaoran's heart in Tokyo. During the Tokyo Revelations, Clone Syaoran consumed Fai's left eye—the source of half his magic—to steal his power. Kamui's blood saved Fai from death but transformed him into a vampire, requiring him to drink Kurogane's blood regularly. This change made Fai colder and more withdrawn; he addressed Kurogane formally to sever emotional ties, though he later resumed affectionate nicknames like "Kuro-rin" after confronting his inner turmoil.
Fai's past and curses were unveiled during the journey. The first curse activated when Sakura intercepted his attack meant for Syaoran, nearly killing her and separating her soul. The second curse endangered dimensional stability. When Kurogane lost an arm shielding Fai, Fai sacrificed his remaining magic to Yūko Ichihara to procure Kurogane a prosthetic arm. Following Fei Wong Reed's defeat, Fai regained his consumed eye but retained vampiric traits. He chose eternal dimensional travel with Syaoran, Kurogane, and Mokona to restore Sakura and Syaoran's lost clones. His demeanor softened, revealing genuine smiles and renewed camaraderie.
Fai appears in other media, including a cameo in *Kobato.* and the *xxxHolic* manga, continuing his journey with the group. His design and narrative role highlight thematic contrasts with Kurogane, reflecting Clamp's exploration of duality and sacrifice.
