Description
Hyoudou Shinsuke, originally named Takekichi, is a wandering ronin introduced as a fearful warrior aspiring to become a strong swordsman. Childhood bullying drives his early motivations to prove himself worthy of being a samurai, though he habitually flees battles due to a fear of death. He encounters the fox spirit Tama and her stepbrother Jinka during their journey to purge evildoers, initially serving as comic relief through haplessness and cowering.

A pivotal transformation occurs after the death of Shakuyaku, a companion turned to stone. This shifts his naive heroism into a vengeful persona consumed by hatred, marking a significant turning point. He abandons earlier ideals and pursues retribution against those responsible for Shakuyaku's fate. His weapon, the demonic sword Maken Arabuki, initially harms him via uncontrolled air explosions when drawn. The sword houses an ancient air-manipulating demon's soul, granting flight, forcefield creation, attack reflection, and extrasensory perception once he develops sufficient spiritual control.

When Maken Arabuki shatters against the antagonist Mudo, Shinsuke reforges it into a short sword. The reforged blade gains loyalty, and heightened spiritual prowess unlocks advanced techniques: Wind Prisons for paralysis and Cyclone Formation for multi-directional assaults. He also demonstrates illusion nullification, intimidation through bloodthirsty auras, and minor banishment. Training with the Mountain God elevates his destructive capability from Wall to Mountain level, speed from Superhuman to FTL+, and durability and striking strength show parallel growth.

Years after the timeskip, as Kazamatsuri Shinsuke, he leads Kyoto under the former Shogun's request. Mentoring Tsukiko and Senya, he guides demons toward peace and aids Senya in mastering demonic communication. His utility abilities include writing tranquility-inducing charms, teaching astral projection, and creating invisibility forcefields around Kyoto with Senya. His personality matures into a calm, strategic genius with keen insights into spiritual systems and moral ethics, contrasting earlier fear or rage. Leadership highlights tactical intellect and empathy, though remnants of past hatred occasionally surface.

Persisting traits include superhuman stamina during hours-long clone battles and pragmatic conflict resolution. His journey progresses from comic cowardice to vengeful obsession, culminating in wise authority.
