Description
Kei Yūki serves as combat commander and radar operator aboard the spaceship Arcadia, holding the position of second mate to Captain Harlock. She ranks as the second youngest crew member, slightly older than cook Tadashi Monono. Her family comprises father Soichiro Yuki (also known as Wataru Yuki), mother Fumi Yuki (also known as Kanna Yuki), uncle Goro Yuki (identified as Captain Harlock or Susumu Kodai), younger brothers Mamoru Yuki and Manabu Yuki, and later, adopted son Ban Idai.

After the Illumidas conquered Earth, her father Goro Yuki published anti-Illumidas newspapers from a small space station. Seeking information on the mythical "Planet of Peace" (Arcadia), Harlock visited the station. Though initially distrustful, Goro sacrificed his life to secure the Arcadia's escape with Kei aboard. Before dying, he embedded crucial "Treasure Island Legend" data within Kei's subconscious, making her vital to locating Arcadia. This event, coupled with her disillusionment over Earth's political corruption and the loss of her parents due to government neglect, drove her to join Harlock's crew in search of freedom and a place without war.

Kei possesses the willowy physique typical of Leiji Matsumoto's female characters, featuring long blonde hair (often shorter than others), long eyelashes, and bright brown eyes. Her standard attire is a primarily pink jumpsuit with a black collar bearing a skull and crossbones emblem, black bloomers, black boots with white tops, and white gloves. Her personality blends kindness, courage, and determination. She exhibits strong loyalty to Harlock, harboring admiration bordering on romantic inclination, which remains unrequited. Initial interactions with Tadashi Monono are rocky, but they develop mutual respect and a close, potentially romantic bond over time. She maintains a particularly strong friendship with crewmate Yattaran.

Years of experience under Harlock honed her technical skills. She is a capable fighter and pilot, proficient in operating Space Wolf fighters and occasionally steering the Arcadia. Her radar expertise enables her to predict enemy attack patterns. She also plays the shamisen. Her surname "Yuki" translates to "Existing Record," symbolizing her role as living proof of her parents' legacy and defiance against Earth's corrupt authorities. Her given name "Kei" means "firefly," referencing Japanese symbols for passionate love, the souls of war dead, and a guiding light – reflecting her desires, resolve, and function within the crew.

Across the broader Leijiverse, Kei's background varies significantly due to inconsistent continuity. She frequently appears as an orphan joining Harlock after losing her parents to events ignored by Earth's government, though specifics differ by series. Her first appearance was in the 1976 manga *Miraizer Ban* as mentor and guardian to time-traveler Ban Idai. In the 1978 *Space Pirate Captain Harlock* series, she forms a close, potentially romantic relationship with crewmate Tadashi Daiba, distinct from Tadashi Monono in *Endless Orbit SSX*. These iterations typically omit her familial connections to Harlock and the detailed "Treasure Island Legend" backstory established in *SSX*.
