Description
The name Genpou Saji in the anime Ikki Tousen: Great Guardians refers to two distinct characters, one being an alias used by a male fighter and the other a female character who is introduced as a primary antagonist. The real Genpou Saji is a young female fighter who appears exclusively in the anime. She endured a difficult past marked by ostracization and bullying from others due to her fascination with insects and her gothic, dark appearance, which caused her to develop a deep-seated hatred for the world around her. In her initial appearance, she is a short girl with black hair tied back in pigtails, often wearing a purple cloak and posing as a fortune teller.
Her personality is initially defined by her intense misanthropy and desire for power, stemming from her past mistreatment, and she actively seeks to inflict suffering on others as a result. She harbors a particular disdain for love and friendship. However, her character undergoes a significant change after encountering Hakufu Sonsaku, whose kind actions convince her that having friends is possible, leading to a more caring disposition. The real Genpou Saji is a master of potent genjutsu, or illusion magic, which she uses as the foundation for her schemes. Her abilities allow her to revive the dead, which she uses to bring back the powerful fighter Housen Ryofu, and to mind-control other fighters, including Ryofu, Gentoku Ryuubi, and Hakufu. She experiences physical pain when using her powers for extended periods.
In the story of Great Guardians, Genpou Saji emerges as a central figure whose goal is to gain more power, initially targeting Gentoku Ryuubi before shifting her focus to Shimei Ryomou. This decision is partly motivated by Ryomou’s relationship with Shishi Ouin, a male fighter who had been using Saji’s name as an alias. She collaborates with Ouin to engineer a false romance between him and Ryomou in an attempt to incite jealousy and manipulate Ryomou's emotions. Her ultimate aim involves obtaining the power of Ryomou's dragon. Her plot also includes possessing other characters, such as Myosai Kakouen, as a pawn. After her plans are thwarted when Hakufu and Ryomou stop the rampaging Ryofu, the real Genpou Saji abandons her vendetta against humanity. By the end of Great Guardians, she goes to live with Chuubou Sonken, under whose care she continues to stay throughout the subsequent series, Xtreme Xecutor, where she enjoys Chuubou's hospitality.
