Description
Hajime Yasaka is the main protagonist of the story, a spirited and energetic thirteen-year-old boy who arrives in Yokohama to spend his summer vacation at his grandfather's house. Physically, he is a short boy with black hair that falls to his ears, black eyes, and a pair of square, dark-framed glasses that are a defining part of his appearance.

Hajime describes himself as a lover of science and possesses a naturally analytical and skeptical mind. When he first encounters the supernatural, he is reluctant to accept it, but witnessing undeniable events, such as a young woman named Arashi making his bicycle float, forces him to reconcile his rational worldview with the impossible reality before him. Despite his scientific inclinations, he is also an impulsive and passionate boy who often acts on emotion rather than logic, especially when his friends are in danger. He is known for being quick-tempered, energetic, and deeply concerned with appearing heroic and manly, often taking cues for his behavior from old superhero stories or action dramas.

His primary motivation throughout the story is his immediate and powerful romantic feelings for Arashi, a beautiful girl who works at a local café called the Ark. Upon discovering that she is a ghost from the World War II era who can travel through time by holding his hand, he eagerly agrees to help her on her mission to save civilians from the air raids that claimed her life. His desire to protect her and cherish their limited time together drives many of his actions, and he frequently displays strong jealousy towards any other man who shows an interest in her, particularly a man named Takeshi Yamashiro whom Arashi once saved in the past.

In the story, Hajime acts as the modern-day anchor for the time-traveling ghosts. His role is to be the physical connection that allows Arashi and her friends to journey back to the 1940s, a power that is activated the first time he touched her hand. He spends his summer working at the Ark alongside Arashi, the café's con artist owner Sayaka, and several other characters. He is often a reluctant participant in their schemes, which range from the mundane, like disposing of spoiled food, to the profoundly heroic, such as rescuing people from historical bombings.

His key relationships are central to the story. His bond with Arashi is the most significant; he is her protector and the one she trusts to accompany her into the past. He also shares a complex and often comedic relationship with Jun Kamigamo, a cafe co-worker who is a girl his own age but who disguises herself as a boy. Hajime remains persistently and inexplicably oblivious to Jun's true gender for a long time, despite numerous obvious clues, a fact that becomes a running source of tension as Jun develops romantic feelings for him in return. He views the cafe owner, Sayaka, as a mentor despite her con artist tendencies, and he shares a competitive and suspicious dynamic with Hideo Murata, a private investigator.

Over the course of the narrative, Hajime undergoes notable character development. He begins as a typical boy driven largely by his infatuation and a desire for adventure, but he grows into someone with a deeper emotional maturity. A pivotal turning point occurs when he travels to the year 1940 and defends a young Arashi from bullies, unknowingly becoming the first love of her life and solidifying their profound connection across time. The realization that Arashi will disappear at the end of the summer intensifies his determination to make every moment count. His motivations expand beyond mere romance to include preserving his friendships and understanding the tragic existences of the ghosts, showing a growing empathy and a desire to alleviate suffering, even if it means challenging the ethical rules of time travel.

His most notable ability is his supernatural connection with Arashi. By simply touching her hand, they can both travel back in time to the World War II era. This connection is unique and allows them to physically interact with and alter the past, a power that Hajime uses primarily to protect others and right past wrongs. His innate courage and protective instincts, while not supernatural, serve as his most valuable assets during these dangerous journeys into a wartorn past.
