Description
Hideo Murata is a character from the anime Natsu no Arashi!. He is a private investigator by profession, though his career is plagued by misfortune and he often finds himself entangled in unsuccessful or humiliating cases. His only regular clients for a time are the ghosts Kanako Yamazaki and Yayoi Fushimi, who assign him various errands. Murata has a rugged and imposing appearance, being tall with a tanned, muscular physique. A prominent scar runs across his face, a result of a confrontation with the yakuza during which he lost his right eye while defending his family. He is consistently seen wearing sunglasses, which has earned him the nickname Gura-san, derived from the Japanese word for sunglasses, sangurasu.
His personal history is deeply intertwined with the supernatural events of the story. Murata is the son of a man named Satsuki Murata, who as a young boy was saved from death during a World War II air raid by the ghost Sayoko Arashiyama, also known as Arashi, who prevented him from going fishing that day. Inspired by the heroism of the woman who saved his father, Murata's own father named him Hideo, a name that echoes the English word hero, instilling in him a desire to protect the weak. He also had a childhood encounter with Arashi and Hajime Yasaka when they traveled to the year 1985, an event that further solidified his admiration for Arashi's courage and selflessness.
Initially, Murata is hired by Kanako to forcibly capture Arashi. However, upon sensing Kanako's malicious aura and witnessing her harmful intentions, he cancels his contract and switches allegiances to help Hajime and Arashi. During the ensuing conflict, he demonstrates his combat skills, using a katana to defend himself and others. After the resolution of this conflict, Murata forms a supernatural bond with Kanako, becoming her primary source of vital energy. This connection sustains Kanako's ghostly form and grants them the ability to travel through time together. Following this, he effectively becomes a butler for Kanako and Yayoi, abandoning his detective work to serve them. He also becomes a regular fixture at the café where the main characters work, helping with tasks and integrating into the group dynamic.
Murata is a highly competitive individual, once racing through the streets and being arrested just to win a bet. Though initially wary of the supernatural, his pragmatic nature and deep-seated loyalty come to define his role within the group, evolving from a lone investigator into a cornerstone of the support system for its ghostly members. His journey is one of redemption and duty, marked by an unyielding devotion to safeguarding others, even if it means binding his life to the spirit world.
