Yūji Itadori entered the world on March 20, 2003, in Sendai City, born to Jin Itadori and Kaori Itadori—a birth meticulously engineered by the ancient sorcerer Kenjaku, who hijacked Kaori’s body to craft a vessel for Ryomen Sukuna. One of Sukuna’s fingers was embedded within Yūji at birth. Raised by his grandfather Wasuke after his parents vanished, Yūji grew into a compassionate athlete with an unwavering moral code, often shielding peers from bullies. Wasuke’s final command to “help others” and “die surrounded by people” became the bedrock of his identity.
When a cursed object containing Sukuna’s finger threatened Megumi Fushiguro and friends, Yūji swallowed it to save them, binding himself to Sukuna as a vessel. This act unleashed vast cursed energy and physical prowess but earned him a postponed execution hinging on consuming all twenty fingers. Mentored by Satoru Gojo at Tokyo Jujutsu High, Yūji trained alongside classmates Megumi and Nobara Kugisaki, his optimism tested by tragedies like Junpei Yoshino’s manipulation and death at Mahito’s hands, which ignited a vengeful resolve against curses.
The Shibuya Incident fractured Yūji’s worldview. Forced to ingest multiple fingers, he temporarily surrendered control to Sukuna, resulting in civilian slaughter. Witnessing mentor Kento Nanami’s death and Nobara’s critical injury deepened his guilt, reshaping his purpose into becoming a “cog” within the jujutsu system. Learning of Kenjaku’s manipulation of his lineage and Sukuna’s possession of Megumi’s body shattered his self-worth, driving him to vow devouring anything to destroy Sukuna and free his friend.
Yūji’s superhuman strength, speed, and mastery of techniques like Divergent Fist and Black Flash make him a formidable curse exorcist. Hosting Sukuna granted poison resistance, though the demon’s transfer to Megumi stripped Yūji of Sukuna’s markings and cost two fingers sacrificed to aid allies. His empathy fosters bonds—Aoi Todo’s boisterous camaraderie, Choso’s fraternal loyalty via shared ties to Kenjaku, and Hiromi Higuruma’s challenge to his misplaced guilt—anchoring him amid despair.
In the Culling Game, Yūji sharpened his resolve against enhanced sorcerers, strategizing to rescue Megumi’s sister Tsumiki. His evolved tactics and cursed energy mastery enabled direct confrontations with Sukuna, surviving brutal clashes. Once fixated on a “proper death,” Yūji now champions the value of ordinary lives and memories, defying destiny while relentlessly striving to end Sukuna’s reign.
