Description
Nana Astar Deviluke is the second princess of the Devilukean royal family, the twin sister of Momo Belia Deviluke, and the younger sister of Lala Satalin Deviluke. She is an alien from the distant planet Deviluke, and she arrives on Earth alongside Momo during the events of the original To Love-Ru series, later becoming a permanent resident of the Yuuki household after convincing her father to let them stay. As a member of the Devilukean royal family, she shares physical traits with her sisters, including a long black tail with a heart-shaped tip. She is visually distinguished by her long pink hair, which she usually wears in pigtails, and her preference for Gothic Lolita fashion, often featuring black and red color schemes. A unique physical feature is a sharp tusk on the left side of her upper teeth.
Nana possesses a straightforward, impatient, and quick-tempered personality, standing in stark contrast to the gentler and more optimistic nature of her twin sister Momo. She is often described as tomboyish and is known for her short temper and tendency to seek out conflict, traits that mirror those of her father. Despite this prickly exterior, she is deeply loyal to her family and protective of those she cares about. Her initial hostility toward the protagonist Rito Yuuki stems from her perception of him as a lazy and selfish individual who is distracting her sister Lala. Over time, as she integrates into life on Earth, her perspective shifts, and she begins to develop her own feelings for him. She exhibits tsundere characteristics, consciously denying her affection for Rito and often reacting with violence when she finds herself in embarrassing situations, yet she unconsciously develops romantic feelings as the series progresses.
Nana's defining ability is her power to communicate telepathically with animals and alien creatures, a skill that allows her to understand their thoughts and needs. She has traveled across the galaxy before the series began, befriending many animal species from different alien worlds. She stores these creatures in a device called a D-Dial, which resembles a mobile phone and allows her to summon animals from a virtual space to assist her in combat or other situations. This ability complements Momo's power to control plants, making the twins formidable together. Nana uses her D-Dial both for utility and humor, often causing chaos when she summons animals in unexpected moments.
In the story, Nana initially appears as a supporting character who tests Rito's worthiness to be engaged to Lala using a virtual reality game called Trouble Quest. After she and Momo flee from Deviluke and move into the Yuuki household, they remodel the attic using space distortion technology to create their own living space. In To Love-Ru Darkness, Nana becomes a student at Sainan High School at Momo's urging, and her role expands significantly. Her narrative arc in the sequel series explores themes of cultural adjustment, friendship, and personal growth. She forms a deep and meaningful friendship with a classmate named Mea Kurosaki, which becomes one of the central emotional focuses of the plot. When Mea reveals her true identity as an alien assassin and living weapon, Nana is heartbroken and traumatized, believing the friendship was never real. Encouraged by Rito, Nana confronts Mea and insists that genuine feelings matter regardless of identity or origin, eventually reconciling with her friend. This experience marks a significant turning point in Nana's emotional development, showing her capacity for empathy, loyalty, and forgiveness.
Her key relationships include her close bond with her twin sister Momo, with whom she shares a playful yet competitive dynamic that often results in comedic friction. She is protective of her older sister Lala and supports her romantic choices. Her relationship with Rito evolves from hostility to a slow-burning affection, making her unique among the female cast who are more quickly infatuated with him. The friendship with Mea is the most emotionally charged arc for Nana, highlighting her deep need for genuine connection and her willingness to fight for those she cares about. Throughout the series, Nana develops from a skeptical, hotheaded observer into a more emotionally complex character who becomes fully integrated into the chaotic life of the Yuuki household, learning about trust, vulnerability, and the value of honest relationships.
